CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - Liberty League First Round vs. St. Lawrence (5/2)

Due to tiebreakers both the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and St. Lawrence University made the way into the Liberty League Tournament, and the two local rivals will get Round Two of 2023 as they will face one another in the Liberty League First Round on Tuesday at Hantz Field.

The Series: The Golden Knights beat the then sixth-ranked Saints in the first meeting of the season, 14-9 in Canton. Sebastian Geiger was the difference maker on offense for Clarkson, scoring eight points on seven goals and an assist.

Key Stats for Clarkson (11-4, 3-4 Liberty League): The Golden Knights achieved the fourth seed and hosting rights for the first round thanks to their win over St. Lawrence two weeks ago. Aside from Geiger's season-best eight points, Bryan Penney scored three goals for the Knights in that game, and Penney leads the team in goals this year with 32, averaging 2.13 per game which is the ninth-best figure in the conference. Despite having played only half of the games this year, Geiger is tied for fifth in scoring for the Knights with 21 points on 15 goals and six assists. Grad student Jacob Mattice had a solid game against St. Lawrence the first time around, stopping 16 shots versus the Saints. He leads the conference in goals against average at 8.57 and also has a .561 save percentage.

Key Stats for St. Lawrence (11-5, 3-4 Liberty League): The Saints come into the conference tournament on a three-game losing skid, though all three of those games came against the top four seeds in the conference in Clarkson, RIT, and Rensselaer. The Saints possess plenty of offense, with three players ranking in the top seven in the conference in points per game. Judge Murphy is sixth in the league (3.75 ppg) thanks to 35 goals and 25 assists for 60 points, while Ben Hutchinson and Mark Mahoney are tied for seventh in the conference (3.50 ppg), as Hutchinson is in the top 10 in goals and Mahoney is in the top 10 in assists. Hutchinson scored four times in the first meeting, and Murphy had a pair of goals and two assists. Paddy Condon also played well for the Saints the first game, winning 16 of 23 faceoffs, in line with his .681 winning percentage in 2023.
