Clarkson Tops Brockport, 7-6

Box Score
Brockport, NY – Holding the opposition without a shot for the final four-plus minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team was able to maintain its modest advantage and claim a 7-6 victory over the College of Brockport on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 on the season while Brockport dropped to 0-2. Clarkson will be back on the road on Tuesday when they travel to Plattsburgh State to take on the Cardinals.

Clarkson scored twice in the first five-plus minutes thanks to seniors Ryan St. Croix and Kyle Brown finding the net, but Brockport responded with two goals in the ensuing five minutes. That was all of the scoring that either team would do for the remainder of the half as the defenses clamped down. It wasn't for a lack of opportunities as Clarkson took 22 shots (nine on goal) and Brockport attempted 18 shots (12 on goal).

Brockport held its first lead at the 9:53 mark in the third quarter when Colton Oliver scored, but Clarkson tied things up just 24 seconds later when Marcus Lavarnway found Conor Bartlett. Less than two minutes later, Ryan St. Croix scored for the Knights, but exactly four minutes after that Brockport tied the game for the third time and the two teams remained knotted at 4-4 through the rest of the period.

In the fourth, Clarkson scored off the initial draw thanks to Marc Simmons' unassisted effort. Thirty-five seconds later Bartlett scored his second goal of the game and the Knights would lead for the rest of the contest. Brockport pulled to within one at the 11:46 mark, but Ryan Drin scored less than two minutes later to put the Knights back up by two. Brendan Fitzgerald scored from Liam Cannon at the 4:04 mark, but that was the last shot of the game for Brockport as Clarkson held possession for almost all of the remaining time.

Bartlett and St. Croix each scored twice, while DaRin and Brown each scored two points on a goal and an assist. Mark Uhlig and Marc Simmons each recorded three groundballs and Justin Gibson caused four turnovers. Nick Strandholm made 16 stops in the Clarkson crease.

For Brockport, Liam Cannon scored three points on two goals and an assist, while Brendan Fitzgerald and Mark Robinson tallied a goal and an assist each. Zach Cook led the team with five groundballs and Conor
Nowak made 10 stops in goal for the Golden Eagles.
