CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - vs. RIT (3/25)

Off to a 5-1 start through six non-league games, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team will now be playing the games that truly count, as the Golden Knights will start the Liberty League schedule against fifth-ranked RIT on Saturday at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights matched their best beginning to a season since 2003 with their 5-1 opening, but they will certainly be challenged by the Tigers, who are also off to a 5-1 start with wins over four ranked teams. Clarkson is 14-27 all-time against RIT, with the Tigers winning the last 10 meetings. The Knights' last victory against RIT came in 2009.

Clarkson has been successful on three occasions on its home field, averaging 15.67 goals per game. Part of that production has come from senior Ryan DaRin, who is leading the conference in goals per game (3.83) and ranks in a tie for fourth in points per game (4.17), having tallied 25 points on 23 goals and two assists. Classmate Ryan St. Croix is steadily moving his way up Clarkson's all-time leaderboard in goals, and he has tossed in 13 more this season to rank second on the team in scoring (13-4-17). Freshman Conor Bartlett has been the team's top playmaker thus far with nine assists to go along with seven goals, while seniors Kyle Brown (10-3-13) and Scott Dosser (3-7-10) have also contributed to the team's offense. Junior Mark Uhlig has been busy with 17 groundballs, one ahead of senior Marc Simmons (16) and freshman Ryan Gabriel (16), who has also emerged as the team's top faceoff man (64-for-105, .610). Both Nate Smart (14 groundballs, five caused turnovers) and Justin Gibson (10 groundballs, nine caused turnovers) have been consistent on defense, as has senior Nick Strandholm (.570 save percentage, 8.10 goals against average).

RIT returned three 2016 All-Americans on offense, including the current career goal leader in the NCAA, Ryan Lee. The senior has scored 184 career goals, the most of any player in Division III, and is tied for the most points with 286. Lee is currently tied with DaRin for third in the Liberty League in points per game (4.17) and has amassed 25 on 12 goals and 13 assists. Both Braden Wallace and Chad Levick are tied for ninth in the league in scoring with 3.17 ppg thanks to 11 goals and eight assists from Wallace and 14 goals and five assists from Levick. Kyle Killen (7-6-13) and Drew Tosaya (7-4-11) are also in double figures for points so far for the Tigers. Steven Ricci has won nearly two-thirds of his faceoffs (40-for-61) and has 28 groundballs in only three games, while Patrick Hannigan has chipped in 26 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. J.D. Hall leads the team with 13 caused turnovers and has tossed in 14 groundballs. In the RIT crease, Nick Nesbitt owns a 10.52 goals against average and .515 save percentage.
