CU Men's Lacrosse Preview - at St. Lawrence University (4/22)

The final week of the regular season has arrived for the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and the Golden Knights find themselves needing just one more win in their last two games to claim a spot in the Liberty League Tournament. The team's first opportunity to finish in the top four will come against Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University on Wednesday afternoon in Canton.

The Golden Knights enter the game with a record of 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence is 8-6 overall and 4-1 in conference games. The Saints are also just one win shy of clinching a spot in the conference tournament and at least the number two slot in the semifinals round. Clarkson is 20-39-1 all-time against St. Lawrence having lost three of the last four, but winning the 2013 semifinal game in the conference tournament.

Wednesday's game will be a contrast in styles as St. Lawrence has largely won on its offense while the Knights have found success defensively. St. Lawrence is outscoring opponents 178-124 this year, but have dominated their opponents in the final three quarters after slow starts, holding a 141-88 edge in the final 45 minutes of games. Conor Healey leads the conference in scoring with 4.50 points per game on 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points, while Tommy Hovey ranks second in the conference in goals per game (2.64) and has recorded 37 total. Overall, the Saints have three of the top six scorers in the league in Healey (63 points), Hovey (48 points) and Jeremy Vantour (45 points). Charlie Duprey has also chipped in 24 points. Alec Dietsch is winning approximately 51 percent of his faceoffs and has 48 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers. Jack Roberts has caused a team-best 27 turnovers and also has added 28 groundballs while Malcolm Lynch has 44 groundballs and 19 caused turnovers. St. Lawrence has split time in the crease between Andrew Butturini and Nick Ford. Butturini has an 8.19 goals against average, third in the league, in 425 minutes of action while Ford has a 9.56 goals against average in 395 minutes of play.

Clarkson's Nick Strandholm has been one of the best in the crease in the conference this year, ranking in the top three in goals against average (8.05), save percentage (.573) and saves per game (10.42), helping the team allow just 8.00 goals per game. Senior JD St. Croix has played a large role on defense as well with 18 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers, and his numbers are almost mirrored by Jamie McBurney (18 groundballs, 9 caused turnovers) and Keith Mierzwa (17 groundballs, 10 caused turnovers). Austin Case is third on the team in groundballs with 32, behind only Strandholm (42) and faceoff specialist Dylan Broomfield (68), who is winning 58.1% of his chances.

Offensively, Ryan St. Croix ranks 10th in the conference in goals per game with two tallies per contest and he is the top man offensively for the Knights with 29 points on 24 goals and five assists. A strong recent run from senior playmaker Corey Herrington has him vying for the scoring lead for Clarkson this year, as he has recorded 12 goals and 16 assists this year for 28 points. Classmate Matt Gold is trying to join Herrington in the 100-point club for his career and has 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points, putting him at 96 points for his career. Sophomore Ryan DaRin has 23 points and freshman Sam Groves has contributed 13 points for Clarkson.
