Senior Brendon Shearin scored three times for Clarkson on Thursday, including an insurance goal in the final minute of the contest.
Rochester, NY - Sophomore Dylan Broomfield (Clinton, NY) won 15 faceoffs and scooped up 11 groundballs to give the Clarkson Univeristy Men's Lacrosse team numerous first-strike opportunities as the Golden Knights opened 2013 with a 13-9 victory over St. John Fisher College Thursday afternoon.

After an even first half, Clarkson shut out the Cardinals in the third period and scored a pair early on to build a three-goal lead, and the Knights maintained a two-goal lead for the remainder of the game.

The key part of the game came late, with the Knights leading 11-8 with less than five minutes to go. St. John Fisher cut the score down to two when Mike Boisvert scored at the 3:35 mark of the fourth quarter for the Cardinals. In the waning minutes, Clarkson was whistled for an infraction that allowed St. John Fisher to play up a man, but junior attackman Peter Goss (Jamesville, NY) scored an unassisted man-down goal with just 1:23 to go, returning Clarkson to its three goal advantage. Senior goaltender Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) took over from there, denying two shots by the Cardinals in the final minute, and classmate Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) capped the game off with a goal with 13 seconds left to provide the final margin.

Broomfield was big in the center, winning 15 of the 24 faceoffs (62.5%) to jumpstart the offense. Shearin led the team with three goals, while sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY) had four points on two goals and two assists. Senior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) chipped in two goals and an assist and junior Tim Krauss (Niskayuna, NY) scored a pair of goals as well. Goss had a goal and an assist, while senior Jamie Stuhlinger (New Hartford, NY), freshman Ben Paprocki (Baldwinsville, NY), and sophomore Mark Nortz (Lowville, NY) also tallied a goal apiece. Senior Jeff Sciera (DeWitt, NY) also tacked on an assist in the box score.

Defensively, the Knights were led by Brian Freeland (East Berlin, CT), who added four groundballs to Clarkson's total of 34. Cole made 12 saves and with a percentage of 57.1% for the afternoon.

For the Cardinals, Greg Ramsden had two goals and an assist while Boisvert scored twice. Jeff Wester also had a goal and two helpers for St. John Fisher.
