Entering his 25th season as head coach of the Clarkson University Lacrosse program, Bill Bergan will guide the Golden Knights into the 15-game 2013 campaign this Thursday when the Green and Gold travel to Rochester to take on the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College in a 4:00 p.m. non-league contest. This is the earliest season-opener in Clarkson's 54-year history.

Clarkson, led by senior tri-captains, goaltender Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY), and midfielders Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) and Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH), returns 30 players from last year’s squad.

The Knights posted a 9-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the Liberty League in 2012. Clarkson returns four conference all-stars from last year, second-team selections Cole and sophomore Corey Herrington (Camillus, NY), and honorable mention choices McCabe and Shearin.

Cole, a starter in all 15 games for the Golden Knights a year ago, ranked third in the league with a .587 save percentage along with a 7.75 goals against average. Herrington, an attackman, ranked third in the league in assists per game and fourth in points per game last season, best among rookies.

Clarkson is picked to finish fourth in the Liberty League Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Knights were the only team other than RIT to pick up a first-place vote.

Clarkson is also receiving votes in the latest USILA Division III Poll.

The Knights are scheduled to open the home portion of the season at Hantz Turf Field on Saturday, March 9 with a 2:00 p.m. game at Brockport State. Clarkson opens the Liberty League slate hosting defending conference champion and preseason favorite RIT on Saturday, March 23 in a 1:00 p.m. home game.
