One of the tougher challenges of the year will face the Clarkson University Baseball team on Wednesday as the Golden Knights will host Oswego State, a participant in the 2018 College World Series.

The Series: Oswego has won four straight against the Knights with Clarkson's last victory coming at home in 2016 when the two teams split a doubleheader. In the last eight years the Green and Gold are 3-6 against the Lakers. The two teams had doubleheaders washed out in 2014 and 2018.

Key Stats for Clarkson (8-6): Although the Knights are hitting just .276 as a team, Clarkson has gotten off recently, batting .359 in its last eight games, seven of which are wins for the Green and Gold. Senior Michael Mieczkowski leads the team in average at .396 with 21 hits in 53 at bats, but sophomore Kent Wilson leads the Knights in OPS at 1.087, much of which has come with him hitting at the top of the Clarkson lineup. Wilson is tied for the team lead in runs batted in (12) and is atop Clarkson's leaderboard in runs (18). Jonathan Irons is also hitting .359 and Joe Stockman has nine of his 10 runs batted in over the last eight games. After four seasons purely as a position player, Stockman has become a two-way player having pitched twice in relief, including a scoreless frame on Saturday against St. Lawrence.

Key Stats for Oswego State (7-1): The Lakers can swing the bats, as the team is averaging more than 11 runs per game through eight contests in 2021. Unsurprisingly, several players are standing out in the early going, with Ryan Enos hitting .519 in 27 at bats with 11 runs scored and 14 more driven in, and Kyle Lauria hitting .464 with 13 runs batted in and 10 runs scored. The Lakers have five regulars hitting .350 or better and have done most of their damage without the benefit of home runs, as Oswego has just four in 265 at bats so far. Since both teams have league games shortly after the midweek tilts, weekend starters likely won't see much more than an inning or two, but Anthony Van Hossen and Kieran Finnegan have performed well so far, with Van Hossen allowing just four hits in 11 innings and Finnegan giving up only six hits in 10 frames.
