Questionable clouds pushed back the Clarkson University Baseball team's doubleheader by a day, but the Golden Knights are nevertheless prepared for their doubleheader challenge against national power SUNY Cortland on Thursday afternoon.

The Series: Despite the proximity of the two schools, Clarkson and Cortland rarely seem able to coordinate schedules. Over the last dozen seasons the two teams have met just four times, with one game occurring in the 2009 NCAA New York Regional, a game that the Golden Knights won 15-12. The other three meetings since 2009 have resulted in Clarkson losses.

Key Stats for Clarkson (1-3): The Golden Knights' pitching staff effectively pitched a doubleheader on Sunday against St. Lawrence, though the schedule was set for just one game. In 17 innings, four pitchers combined to strikeout 22 hitters while allowing just six hits and four walks, a better showing than the three previous games against St. John Fisher. Offensively, sophomore Kent Wilson provided the big blow, a deep sacrifice fly that allowed Sunday's marathon to come to an end. Wilson is hitting .400/.444/.867 with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in. Senior Michael Mieczkowski is batting .294/.429/.353, a line that would be better had the outfielder not struck out in his first three plate appearances of the young season.

Key Stats for Cortland (2-2): Although others have higher batting averages and on-base percentages, junior Scott Giordano leads the Red Dragons offense with a .438/.471/.938 slash line in the early going of 2021. Giordano has four extra-base hits among his seven knocks, including a pair of doubles and two home runs. Two years ago, Giordano hit .326 with impressive power numbers, including 21 doubles, five triples, four home runs, and 45 runs batted in over the course of 48 games. Matthew Krafft and Daniel Coleman are each hitting .500 through four contests this season, and Krafft's line may not be an early season fluke, as he was 19-for-41 (.463) from 2019-2020. Cortland's pitching staff has shown a little wildness early on, walking 17 in 34 innings.
