Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Vincent Granuzzo scored six times, drove in six runs, and delivered seven hits for the Clarkson University Baseball team as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader from Vassar College, winning game one 13-3 and finishing up an 18-5 win in game after it was initially called for darkness on Friday.

It took a few innings for either team to get started, but in the latter innings the Golden Knights batted around twice to put the game away. The Knights opened the scoring in the fourth when Brad Pearson doubled to right-center and came around on a single by Vincent Granuzzo, but with two outs in the bottom half of the frame, Vassar plated three. Taylor Smach singled and David Bonfiglio walked to set up Matt Schwartz's run-scoring single and Robert Pinataro followed with a two-run single to put the Brewers up 3-1.

Clarkson really got rolling in the fifth when the Knights batted around. Mike Bonk walked and Tommy Bianchi followed with a base on balls, bring Brad Pearson to the plate with two outs. Pearson took two balls outside, prompting a visit from the dugout. Already in a hitter's count, Pearson smacked the 2-0 fastball out to right for a three-run homer to put the Knights up 4-3. Clarkson tacked on another run, still with two outs, without the benefit of a hit, combining three walks and a hit by pitch to force a run in.

In the sixth, the Green and Gold again sent two runners home as a two-out blooper to left-center from Granuzzo scored Tommy Bianchi and a soft single over the first baseman's head by Mike Nee scored Pearson. In the seventh, the Knights put things away with a six-run inning. Mike Tito singled home Joe Stockman, Brad Pearson drove in Tito with a single, Granuzzo plated a pair with a two-run double to the left-center gap and a bases loaded single saw Stockman drive in a run. Mike Bonk was later hit by a pitch to force in another run with the bases loaded.

Mark Connor pitched the first 3.2 innings for the Knights, but it was Mike Bubniak who would get the win, tossing 3.1 scoreless frames and allowing just a single hit with four strikeouts. Pearson finished 4-for-5 with four runs scored and four more driven in and Granuzzo was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and four RBI. Mike Nee was 2-for-2, but reached base in all five of his plate appearances thanks to a walk and two hit by pitches. Tito and Burns also picked up two hits apiece.

Game two saw Clarkson get on the scoreboard first once again, this time a little earlier. After Mitchell Mullock sent down the first four hitters of the game for the Knights, Vincent Granuzzo singled to left-center and Nolan Duda singled to center. The pair of runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, allowing Mike Krick's fly ball to center to score Granuzzo easily from third. With two outs, Mike Messier laid down a bunt to score Duda and the ensuing throwing error from the pitcher sent Joe Stockman home all the way from first, putting the Knights up 3-0.

Back to start the second game, Bubniak continued to be unhittable, setting down the first 12 hitters he faced. However, the Brewers finally solved the senior lefty in the bottom of the fifth, stringing together some offense to load the bases with no one out. After a fly out put a temporary stop to the Vassar parade, Brent Shimoda singled softly to center to score one run and Matt McGannon hit a sacrifice fly to pull the Brewers within one. Freshman reliever Ben Shpur, who came on after the Shimoda single, got induced a groundout to escape the jam.

Clarkson took little time to respond, posting four runs in the top of the sixth. Brad Pearson hit his second home run of the doubleheader, depositing a 1-1 pitch over the right-center fence to quickly make the score 4-2. Granuzzo and Krick singled and Stockman walked to load the bases. Ninth-place hitter Mike Messier then hit a single down the left field line as the ball glanced off the third baseman's glove, allowing two runs to score. One out later, Tommy Bianchi singled to center with a blooper to score another run, giving the Knights a 7-2 advantage.

Vassar did not give up after the big innings by the Knights, getting three straight hits from Matt Martino, Trausch and Smach to push one run across and a passed ball added another. With one out, Ethan Kornbrek came on in relief of Shpur and escaped a first and third jam with a 4-6-3 double play.

The Knights put up another crooked number in the seventh inning, scoring three times. Brad Pearson led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball, coming home on a Granuzzo single to center. Nolan Duda then walked and Joe Stockman surprised the Vassar defense with a push bunt single to load the bases. Mike Messier then took the first pitch to left for a single to plate Granuzzo and Duda then came home when the leftfielder bobbled the ball on the transfer, giving the Green and Gold a 10-4 lead through seven innings.

In the eighth, Clarkson tacked on four insurance runs as Nolan Duda singled home Nate Burns, who reached on an error, and a fielder's choice allowed Brad Pearson to score for the first two runs of the inning. Later on, Messier added another RBI single and Tito doubled home a run for a 14-4 lead. Clarkson scored more four runs in the top of the ninth when the game was resumed Saturday morning.

With one more at bat remaining, Mike Messier was 5-for-6 with seven runs driven in and Granuzzo was 4-for-6 with four runs scored. Joe Stockman came around three times and was 2-for-5 while Duda and Tito also contributed two hits. Pearson was 2-for-4 with a pair of walks, scoring four times for Clarkson.
