Granuzzo Homers Twice in Knights Sweep of St. Lawrence

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Potsdam, NY – With a doubleheader sweep on Sunday, the Clarkson University Baseball team did its part in hopes of getting into the conference tournament, but the Golden Knights did not get enough help from other parts of the state and will miss out on a chance at the league title despite 8-2 and 12-7 wins over St. Lawrence to close out the regular season.

The Golden Knights finished the conference season with wins in 11 of their final 18 league contests and close out the year at 16-16 overall and 11-11 in league play. St. Lawrence saw its season come to an end at 7-26-1 and 6-17-1.

In the opener, Clarkson put up crooked numbers in two of the first three innings to build a solid lead early and senior righty Will Coleman did the rest, striking out 10 in seven innings for his sixth complete game of the season.

The Golden Knights pushed two across in the first inning, only to see St. Lawrence tie the game by the bottom of the second. In the first, Nate Burns led off with a single and was moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Ben Knauf. Brad Pearson then singled home Burns and came around himself on a Will Coleman single to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead. The Saints rallied with a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Brendon Frank, and then tied the game in the second thanks to an RBI-triple by Tylor Guido.

In the top of the third, Clarkson plated three as Knauf reached on an error and Brad Pearson singled to set the stage for Vincent Granuzzo, who hit a lined shot over the left field wall for a three-run homer. Two innings later, Pearson tested the boundaries of Tom Fay Field, hitting one over the right field wall to put the Knights up 6-2. St. Lawrence threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but a base running miscue kept the Saints off the board as Brendon Frank ran through the stop sign at third base and was hung up in a run down, put out by Clarkson third baseman Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra.

Clarkson knocked in two insurance runs in the top of the sixth as Justin Judson started a two-out rally with a double. Nate Burns then blooped a double down the right field line to score Judson and came around on Brad Pearson's single to give Clarkson an 8-2 advantage.

Coleman finished with 10 strikeouts against just one walk while allowing eight hits in seven innings, with his earned run average "ballooning" from 1.34 to 1.52. Pearson finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored while both Burns and Coleman went 2-for-4 at the dish.

In game two, both team's offenses were clicking, enabled by extra opportunities as each team committed three errors. Clarkson scored twice in the first thanks to a two-run single from Dan Pariso and the Knights added two more in the second on a Nate Burns single and a Will Coleman sacrifice fly. A bases loaded fielder's choice in the third put the Knights up 5-0, but St. Lawrence responded with two in the bottom half of inning on an Evan O'Keeffe double and a James Cronin sacrifice fly. Both teams added a run in the fifth, and Clarkson added two more in the top of the sixth with a bases loaded walk by Vincent Granuzzo and when Ben Knauf was hit by a pitch to force in another run.

The five-run cushion was reduced drastically in the bottom half of the six as St. Lawrence recorded four straight hits. Brendon Frank singled home one run and O'Keeffe doubled in another, but it was James Cronin that brought both of those hitters home with a single to right to make the score 8-7 through six.

The scoreboard was lit with zeroes for the seventh and eighth innings, but the Knights tacked on four insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Will Coleman drove in a pair with a single to center and two batters later Vincent Granuzzo hit his second home run of the doubleheader to plate both himself and Coleman, giving Clarkson a 12-7 advantage.

Burns finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored in game two, while Granuzzo was 1-for-4 with four runs scored and three more driven in. Coleman also was 1-for-4 but scored twice and drove in three. For St. Lawrence James Cronin drove in four with a 2-for-4 effort and Evan O'Keeffe went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
