Coleman Hurls Gem In Clarkson Split Versus Vassar

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Will Coleman tossed seven spotless innings for the Clarkson University Baseball team to earn his first win of the season as the Golden Knights split a doubleheader against Vassar College, 4-0 and 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at Prentiss Field.

The Golden Knights finished the weekend with wins in three of the four games, moving to 8-10 overall and 3-5 in conference games. Vassar moved to 11-10 overall and still sits two games above .500 in conference contests at 7-5. Clarkson is scheduled to play Oswego State on Wednesday in a doubleheader and then faces Skidmore College in another four-game conference series next weekend.

Coleman struck out the side in both the first and fourth innings and then sent the last two hitters of the game down via strikeouts. He finished with nine whiffs in seven innings, allowing just four hits and no walks for the complete-game shutout.

Clarkson made sure that Coleman's gem wasn't wasted by scoring two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Coleman led off the fourth with a single but was erased on a fielder's choice by Brad Pearson. However, Pearson was able to circle the bases by moving up on a walk, groundout and passed ball to make it 1-0. Joe Stockman then drove in another run in the inning with a single that scored Mike Krick.

In the sixth, Clarkson put together a solid rally with singles from Pearson and Krick, and a Joe Stockman walk loaded the bases. Ben Knauf was then hit by a pitch to force in a run and Ernesto Ruiz-Sierra grounded out to put another run across, which was more than enough for Coleman.

Nate Burns and Will Coleman each went 2-for-4 at the dish, while both Pearson and Krick scored twice in the first game.

In game two, Clarkson scored once in the top of the first on a Brad Pearson single, but that was all that the Knights could get as Mitchell Mullock threw eight strong frames, pitching to contact with just one strikeout in the game. Mullock was helped out by a five RBI game from Bobby Kinne, who drove in two in the third with a home run and then cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the eighth. Bryan Rubin also drove in a run with a single in the seventh inning.

Rory Corcoran took the loss for Clarkson, though he allowed just seven hits in 6.2 innings of work, striking out four along the way. Both Burns and Pearson delivered two hits in the nightcap for the Knights. For Vassar, Tanner Blough was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Kinne was 2-for-3. Logan Willans pitched a scoreless ninth for Vassar, avoiding any damage from a hit and a walk by striking out three in the inning.
