Clarkson Travels to Skidmore for Midweek Doubleheader

Just three days after traveling to Rochester, the Clarkson University Baseball team will hit the road for another doubleheader as the Golden Knights travel to Skidmore for two games on Wednesday afternoon.

Clarkson is 5-7 overall this season and is 2-2 in the Liberty League. The Green and Gold split a doubleheader against Rochester last weekend, with Rochester taking the first game on both Saturday and Sunday and Clarkson doing the same in the later games.

For Clarkson, Dom Pirro has propped up the offense so far this season. Pirro leads Clarkson with a .426 batting average and is tied for fourth in the Liberty League. Pirro is also tied for third in the conference in hits (20) and is fifth in slugging percentage (.660). Cam Bando, Chris Miller, and Will Coleman are the other Clarkson hitters with double digit hits so far, as the trio has 12, 11, and 10 hits respectively. Miller is tied for eighth in the Liberty League in doubles with four while Bando is tied for second with a pair of triples. Joe Stockman leads the Liberty League in strikeouts, as he has whiffed just one time this season, and in sacrifice bunts, as he has laid down five so far.

For the pitchers, Ted Wilson has been the strongest performer for Clarkson. Wilson earned his second win of the season against Rochester and is seventh in the conference with a earned run average of 2.50, which also leads Clarkson. Wilson also leads the team with 18 innings pitched. Although he added another loss to his record, Andrew Smith had a strong performance against the Yellowjackets. Smith threw a complete game and struck out nine batters. Smith leads Clarkson with 16 batters struck out, putting him in a tie for seventh in the conference. Just behind him is Ryan Riley who has 13 strikeouts. The trio have all shown great command, with each in the top 10 of the conference for fewest walks allowed. Riley is tied for first as he has issued a solitary free pass. Clarkson has also used multiple options out of the bullpen, as Pirro, Riley, and Nate Burns have all recorded a save.

Skidmore comes in with a 6-6 overall record and a 1-3 record in conference. The Thoroughbreds returned seven position players and five starting pitchers this year, but were still picked to finish eighth in the Liberty League in the Preseason Poll. Skidmore opened up conference play with a four game set against Union and took just one win. The Thoroughbreds hit just .236 against Union and had an ERA of 6.43 in the series, both of which are much worse than their overall stats of .327 and 5.12. Josh Brown and Will Potter are second and third in the conference in hitting as Brown is batting .469 while Potter is at .452. Steven Gilbert has gotten on base repeatedly, as he is second in the Liberty League with a .553 OBP. Finally, Pat Geiger provides the pop as he has a slugging percentage of .657 and three home runs already. Pitching wise, Jay Gamboa (1.84) and Andrew Aikins (2.61) are in the top ten in the conference in ERA and each have two victories.

Clarkson hosted Skidmore in the 2016 season and swept a four game series against the Thoroughbreds with the total margin finishing at 40-12. In all four games, Clarkson did not trail after the first inning. The Green and Gold's success against Skidmore was not an outlier seeing as Clarkson also swept the Thoroughbreds in 2014.

First pitch for Wednesday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
