CU Baseball Preview - vs Union (4/29-4/30)

With just one weekend remaining in the regular season, the Clarkson University Baseball team will honor its five seniors as the Golden Knights host Union in a four game set in Jack Phillips Stadium.

Clarkson is 15-15 overall this season and has an 11-7 Liberty League record. The Green and Gold currently sit in third place in the conference standings.

Clarkson has two senior pitchers. Ted Wilson has his fingerprints all over the all-time pitching leaders at Clarkson. Wilson leads Clarkson with a 2.80 ERA, which is just below his career ERA of 2.92. That is the third lowest mark among Clarkson pitchers with at least 75 career innings pitched. He is 5-0 this season, giving him 13 wins in his career, which is eighth all-time. His 5-0 record is also the most wins without a loss in a single season since Will Coleman had the same record in the 2015 season. Jeremy Barber has made four appearances, with three of them starts, this season. He has struck out 14 batters in just 12.1 innings of work. Overall, Barber has pitched in 13 games in his career and earned two victories in the 2015 season.

Offensively, Chris Miller and Dom Pirro have moved into the top 10 at Clarkson in a variety of categories. Miller is tied for the team lead with nine doubles and has 38 for his career, the fourth highest total for a Golden Knight. Miller also has 137 hits and 95 runs scored in his career and needs six more hits and seven more runs to move into the top ten in each category. Miller is also 14th all time in batting average (.339) and 11th in slugging percentage (.490). Pirro leads the team with three home runs, giving him nine for his career. He is tied for seventh right now in the Clarkson all-time leaderboard and can become only the sixth Clarkson player with ten career home runs with one more blast. Connor Dietrich has hit .253 in his career and has scored 21 runs.

Joe Fraser leads Clarkson with a .364 batting average, placing him tenth in the Liberty League. Fraser is also tied for fifth in doubles with nine. Also tied with Fraser is Miller, with Miller also tied for seventh in runs scored with 22. Pirro is just ahead of him in sixth as he has scored 26 times. Pirro is also sixth in hits with 38 and tied for sixth in RBI's with 21. Finally, Pirro is tied for fourth with three home runs. Wilson leads the conference in innings pitched with 45.0 and is sixth in ERA as well as tied for the lead with five wins. Nate Burns is also tied for the league lead in saves with four, which ties the Clarkson single season record. Andrew Smith is tied for ninth in the conference with 26 strikeouts.

Union is 17-10 on the season and the Dutchmen's 11-5 Liberty League record has them in second place. Union was picked to finish first in the preseason coach's poll after winning the conference tournament in the 2016 season. Jake Vesling leads the Dutchmen with a .423 batting average while Kent Curran has a team high 37 hits. Curran leads the Liberty League with 14 doubles and has 20 extra base hits in total. On the mound, Vesling and Ryan Kuchar have a team high 36.2 and 33.0 innings pitched. Vesling has four wins on the year while Kuchar's 2.45 ERA is the lowest on the squad.
Clarkson and Union split a doubleheader in the regular season last year, but the Dutchmen got the last laugh with a 3-1 win in the Liberty League playoffs.

The two teams will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm followed by two more games on Sunday starting at 12:00 noon.
