CU Baseball Preview - at Oswego State (4/18)

After a four game sweep to help move up the Liberty League standings, the Clarkson University Baseball team will travel to Oswego for a midweek doubleheader.

Clarkson is 12-11 overall and 9-5 in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights took four from Bard at home over the weekend. Three of the four wins were tight as Clarkson won by three or less runs. Clarkson was led by its pitching as Bard could only muster 13 runs in the four games. Clarkson now has a 3.87 team ERA in conference games, which is second in the league. Ted Wilson leads the Liberty League with 35 innings pitched and is fifth in earned run average at 2.31. Mike Bubniak is tenth in ERA at 3.81 and has three wins, which only trails Wilson's four for the Clarkson team lead. Andrew Smith is tied for ninth in the conference in strikeouts with 24. Finally, Nate Burns is tied for the league lead in saves with three while Ryan Riley has two of his own, putting him in a tie for third.

Dom Pirro leads Clarkson in almost every batting statistic. He has a .384 batting average (eighth in the Liberty League), .558 slugging percentage (tied for eighth in the conference), and a .444 on-base percentage. He has scored a team high 21 runs and knocked in 19 as well. Behind him in batting average is Ben Knauf who is hitting .339. Cam Bando (.325), Joe Fraser (.317), and Chris Miller (.305) are the other Clarkson players hitting above .300. Miller leads the team with seven doubles and is second in runs scored with 17 while Bando has a team high two triples and trails just Pirro in RBI's with 14. Fraser and Knauf both have 13 RBI's of their own.

Oswego is 19-7 overall this season and is 10-2 in the SUNYAC conference. The Lakers are coming off taking the final two games of a three game set with Brockport and are currently ranked 14th in the country.  Eric Hamilton leads the Lakers with a .379 batting average and .621 slugging percentage and he already has 17 extra base hits, including 14 doubles. Alex Brown has just 28 at bats on the season, but he has hit safely in 11 of them for a .393 batting average. Mitchell Cavanaugh and Tim Cronin have each thrown 45.1 innings this season with Cavanaugh sporting a 6-0 record and a 1.79 ERA while Cronin is 7-0 with a 1.99 earned run average.

Last season, Oswego came to Potsdam ranked fourth in the country and riding a 15-game winning streak, but Clarkson took a 12-7 win in the doubleheader opener. Oswego won the second game 8-2 to split the series. That was the first time the two teams had met since Oswego earned a 11-4 win in the 2013 season.

The two teams will square off in the twinbill starting at 2:00 pm on Tuesday.
