CU Baseball Preview - at Union College (4/30-5/1)

Two weeks remain in the conference season and quite a bit is still up for grabs for the Clarkson University Baseball team as the Golden Knights look to continue on their recent roll when they take on Union College this weekend at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam, NY.

The Golden Knights have won 11 of their last 12 games in the Liberty League since starting the season 0-4 at RIT and have catapulted themselves into first place with a record of 11-5 (16-13 overall). However, that position is tenuous at best since Union, Rochester and Vassar all trail by a single game and Rensselaer is down by just two. With another strong showing, this weekend's games could go a long way in securing a playoff spot.

Since the calendar turned to April, the Golden Knights have been hot both at the plate and on the mound. Clarkson leads the Liberty League in hitting, thanks in large part to Chris Miller. The junior outfielder leads the conference in numerous categories, including all three slash stats (.433 batting average, .512 on-base percentage, .644 slugging percentage), hits (45) and runs (32). His numbers become even more eye-popping when just considering the 16 league contests, where he is hitting .491/.586/.782 with 10 extra-base hits, including all three of his home runs. Greg Jasek, the defending Liberty League Performer of the Week, has also produced at the plate with a .377/.468/.547 line, with all three figures ranking in the top 10 in the conference. The senior first baseman is second in the league with 31 runs driven in and has accumulated 14 extra-base hits overall. Classmate Anthony Padrazo has played a solid shortstop all season and has proven last year was no fluke at the dish, hitting .356/.465/.433, with his OBP ranking fifth in the conference and leading to a league-high 32 runs, a spot he shares with Miller.

On the mound, Clarkson has also seen some stability emerge late in the year. Junior Ted Wilson has been good all season long, ranking fifth in the conference in earned run average (1.90), but fellow weekend starters Eddie Miller and Will Coleman have also stepped up. Miller has a 4.54 earned run average for the year, but he hasn't allowed an earned run in his last three starts (20 innings). Coleman has a 4.50 earned run average for the season, but he has posted a 2.81 mark in his last 25.2 innings while striking out 26 hitters with only a single walk in that time frame.

Union was picked as the pre-season favorite in the Liberty League because of depth on the mound, and the Dutchmen haven't disappointed with a 3.41 team ERA and a .259 opponents' batting average, both the best marks in the league. While several pitchers have performed well, the key to the staff for the Dutchmen is Jake Fishman. The junior has an earned run average of just 0.51 in 35 innings and has struck out 51 hitters while allowing just 27 hits and seven walks. He has also delivered at the plate, hitting .388/.465/.506, with the former two numbers ranking in the top four in the conference. Jamie Faber bolsters the lineup with a .377/.427/.435 line, and Eric Egan has been a dangerous hitter with .307/.415/.489 production. Egan has also hit three homers and stolen nine bases for the Dutchmen.
