Baseball Travels to Union

Baseball will take the field for the first time in three weeks.
Coming off their best start since 1943, the Clarkson University Baseball team will take the field for the first time outside of the state of Florida when it hits the road for four conference games against Union.

Clarkson left Florida with 10 wins in 11 games, including a four game sweep over Liberty League rival Vassar. However, the weather has prevented them from playing any games the last three weekends.  They are currently receiving votes in both the ABCA Poll and the D3Baseball.com poll. Union is 10-5 overall and has a 6-2 Liberty League record.

The Golden Knights have been led by their pitching staff. They currently have a 1.78 ERA which is the lowest in the Liberty League by nearly two runs and is third in the nation. They are also ranked 12th in hits per nine innings and 17th in WHIP. Juniors Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY), Joe Rooney (Melrose, NY), and Ian Castle (East Greenbush, NY) along with freshman Will Coleman (Potsdam, NY) all have 2-0 records and ERA's below three so far. Sophomore Jeremy Barber (Plattsburgh, NY) has a 1-1 record on the year, but he is second on the team in ERA at 0.90 while his classmate Ted Wilson (Lancaster, NY) also has a win to go along with a pair of saves. The pitching staff has been helped by a stingy defense behind them as the Green and Gold have a fielding percentage of .968 which is second in the league, trailing only Union for the best rate in the Liberty League.

Clarkson has hit .322 as a team through the first eleven games and has seven hitters whose batting average is better than .300. The offense is led by senior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) who is ranked tied for second in the nation in batting average at .571 and tied for third in on-base percentage at .625. Coleman also has a streak of 50 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout, which is the longest Clarkson streak since JJ Lorence in 2005. He is one of  only eight hitters who have not struck out yet this season, and of those eight, Coleman has the third-most at bats. He is also eleventh in the country in runs per game with 1.50. Sophomore Dom Pirro (Liverpool, NY) leads the team with 16 RBIs with Jasek in second after knocking in 11 runs. Pirro's 1.45 RBI per game average is 22nd in the nation.

The Dutchmen were picked to finish second in the Liberty League preseason poll. They opened their conference schedule by splitting a four game set with RPI and followed that up with a four game sweep of Bard. Junior outfielder Eric Egan has been productive at the plate for Union. His .429 batting average and .738 slugging percentage are seventh and second respectively in the Liberty League. He also leads the league with five triples, a total that places him fourth in the country. On the mound, sophomore Jake Fishman is 2-1 and his 0.90 earned run average leads the conference and is 38th in the country. His is 21st in the country in strikeouts per nine innings with 12.15. Fishman is also tied with Jamie Faber for the team lead in batting average as he is hitting .488. The pair are both in the top 25 in batting average in the country. The Dutchmen also lead the Liberty League in fielding percentage at .975.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm followed by a doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon.
