Clarkson Splits with St. Lawrence in Sunday Doubleheader

Jarrod Mattingly tossed a gem against St. Lawrence in game two on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – After losing a tight one in game one, the Clarkson University Baseball team had no problem scoring in the second game as they split with St. Lawrence, losing 3-2 and winning 9-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights now stand at 8-10 on the season with a 4-6 mark in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence moves to 11-8 and 6-4 in conference.

Senior Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) led the way with three RBI in the nightcap, as he doubled home a pair in the second inning and hitting a sacrifice fly in the third. Clarkson led 3-0 going into the third inning before striking for five runs to open the game up. Junior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) led off the inning and advanced to second base as junior Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) singled to give the Knights a pair of runners with no outs. A sacrifice bunt by Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) was thrown away by St. Lawrence starting pitcher Dan Hedden, and Coleman came around to score. A passed ball would plate Driscoll for the second run of the inning, and senior Kyle Henchey (Rensselaer, NY) knocked in another run with a single to center.

Lenney, Coleman, Driscoll Henchey and junior Bob Derico (Watervilet, NY) all had multiple hits for the Knights in the second game of the day, as Clarkson pounded out 15 hits in all. Senior Jared Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) pitched two innings in relief in game one before going the distance in game two. Allowing just five hits and one run over nine innings, Mattingly kept the St. Lawrence offense in check throughout the second game. He walked two and struck out seven to pick up his third victory of the season.

The Knights held an early lead in game one, but could not hang on to win. Clarkson had two runners on in the first with only one away, but the Saints threw out the lead runner at third base in a double steal attempt to kill the momentum. Freshman Eddie Miller (Lake Grove, NY) ran into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the first, allowing two runners to reach after getting the first two outs, but a strikeout ended the rally for St. Lawrence. Clarkson scored first in the top of the second as sophomore Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) led off with a double over the centerfielder's head. After the Saints recorded an out, Nolan Driscoll would single home Jasek to give Clarkson the 1-0 lead.

The Knights would double their lead in the fourth inning when Jasek reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Jenack would advance the runner with a sacrifice bunt, and Driscoll would once again single home Jasek to put Clarkson on top 2-0. The Saints would respond in the bottom of the frame, using a leadoff walk to get things going. A single would advance the runner, and he would keep running all the way home following a throwing error from centerfield. St. Lawrence would add to its lead in the fifth inning, as Mark Syron would start the rally after being hit by a pitch from Miller. He would steal second and advance to third on a single by Bryan Palermo. A walk would load the bases and the Saints would score twice on a ground ball on the infield. Opting to try for the double play, Coleman went to second, allowing the runner from third to score to tie the game at 2-2. The throw to first to get the batter went wide of the mark, allowing the runner on second to come around and give the Saints the 3-2 lead.
