SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Clarkson University Baseball team could not get things going offensively as they were swept by St. Lawrence 7-2 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights drop to 7-9 on the year and 3-5 in the Liberty League while the Saints improve to 10-7 with a league record of 6-3. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader at Skidmore College starting at noon.

The Saints scored early in game one, getting a run in each of the first two innings before scoring a pair in the third. Sophomore Greg Jasek (Chittenango, NY) went 4.1 innings for Clarkson, surrendering five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out four Saints on the afternoon but the damage was done early. Zane Fish hit a home run to left field in the second inning, and Devin Robson went 2-for-4 with three RBI as the DH. The Knights were held in check by Joe Riley, who allowed only three hits in his seven innings of work. Clarkson rallied for their two runs in the seventh inning as senior Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) and junior Nolan Driscoll (Troy, NY) walked and eventually scored, but it was too little, too late as the Saints won 7-2.

Senior Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) was strong on the mound for Clarkson in the nightcap, going 8.1 innings and allowing only two earned runs. The Saints struck first in the top of the first inning as Khifer O'Connor hit a home run down the left field line, but Roma would settle in and scatter nine hits throughout the game. Clarkson would answer immediately as David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) crushed a home run right down the left field line that made a splash landing just short of the road.  St. Lawrence would get on the board again in the fifth inning as the Saints used three singles and an error to score twice. Clarkson would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth as Lenney doubled and scored as junior John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) traded places with him with a double of his own. St. Lawrence would score again in the top of the ninth, and that insurance run would prove to be the difference. The Knights made it 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth as senior Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) walked and scored on freshman Dom Pirro's (Liverpool, NY) pinch-hit single. Wixted came to the plate with two outs representing the winning run but flew out to center to end the game.
