Knights Fall in Two Straight to Union

Schenectady, NY - Late-inning rallies in each of Sunday's contests cost the Clarkson University Baseball team, as the Golden Knights fell to Union College 8-3 and 5-3 in Liberty League action at Central Park.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League and have now lost five of their past six games. Union moved to 7-4 and 3-1. Clarkson will look to get back on track next weekend when it visits Rensselaer.

In the opener, Union scored an unearned run in the second, but the Knights responded with a tally of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) raced home on a throwing error following a Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) single to center. Union scored two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth, but Clarkson picked up two in the bottom half of the fifth when Pete Clarke (Tully, NY) and David Kinney (Mexico, NY) hit back-to-back doubles. Clarke came around on Kinney's shot to left-center and then raced home on a David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) single through the left side. Union, however would put the game away in the top of the sixth inning as the Clarkson pitchers struggled with their control, allowing four runs on three hits with a two-run single by Matt Barreto turning out to be a decisive blow.

In game two, Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) came out strong as the Knights' starting pitcher and allowed just a single run in six-plus innings of work, giving up six hits while striking out five. Clarkson struck in the bottom of the first with three runs as Wixted drove home Coleman on a single and Kinney scampered home on a groundout by Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY). Wixted then raced home on a passed ball for the Knights, giving them a 3-0 lead.

The three runs were all that Clarkson could muster, however, and Union rallied once Coleman exited the game. Back-to-back singles in the eighth inning started a rally for the Dutchmen, and pinch-hitter David Peretti delivered a three-run homer to give Union a 4-3 edge. Four batters later, a single plated an insurance run for Union as Clarkson went down in the eighth and ninth innings.
