Middle Inning Outbursts Sends Skidmore Past Clarkson, 14-5

Ithaca, NY – Two big innings put the Clarkson University Baseball team in a hole early on and the Golden Knights could never recover, falling 14-5 to Skidmore College on the first day of the Liberty League Tournament, hosted by Ithaca College at Booth Field on the campus of Cornell University.

The third-seeded Golden Knights saw their season mark fall to 18-14 overall while second-seeded Skidmore moved to 21-15-2. Clarkson faces the fourth seed Rensselaer at 10:00 am tomorrow morning in an elimination game, and the winner will advance to a second contest at 4:00 pm on Friday.

Skidmore picked up a run in both the first and second inning, each time with two outs. Zachary Leiderman hit a solo home run to right in the first and Landon Schwartzman singled home Eddie Galvao in the second for an early 2-0 lead. Clarkson responded with two runs in the top of the third. Cam Jerrett started the rally by reaching on a hit by pitch and he moved to second on a fielder's' choice, with Joe Figliolino reaching on the error. David Harris followed up with a single up the middle to score Jerrett and Beau Vardion's single scored Figliolino to tie the game at 2-2.

Skidmore opened things up with six runs in the fourth, beginning with an Andy Pelc solo home run. Trey Bourque and Leiderman each doubled in runs, Ewen Donald singled in another, and Galvao singled home one more while an extra run scored on an error. The Knights did get two runs back in the top of the fifth, again with two outs, as David Harris took a walk and then trotted home on Beau Vardion's home run to right, making it 8-4.

The Thoroughbreds broke the game open in the fifth, taking full advantage of a number of mistakes in the field by the Knights. Two runs scored on infield hits, another came home a dropped fly ball, one more scored on a bases loaded walk, a passed ball scored another, and one more base hit plated the sixth run of the frame.

Clarkson picked up one run in the seventh with Cam Jerrett beginning the inning with a leadoff walk. Figliolino then doubled to left, allowing for Davis Harris's grounder to short to plate Jerrett, but that was all that the Knights would get in the inning and for the remainder of the game.

Vardion finished the day at 2-for-4 with three RBI and David Harris reached base four times thanks to two hits and two walks, while also driving in two runs. Will Roda also picked up a pair of hits on the day.

For Skidmore, Bourque and Leiderman proved to be tough outs, each delivering four hits in the contest. Pelc also recorded three hits on the day.

Chase Siegel gained the win, scattering seven hits and working around five walks in seven frames, striking out five along the way. Cole Riskin took the loss for the Knights, striking out four in 3.2 innings. Jacob Shirley pitched 2.1 innings for Clarkson and was credited with just one earned run while striking out two, and Tommy DiFranco tossed two scoreless innings to close out Clarkson's pitching for the day.
