Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Knights' Season Comes to a Close in Loss to RPI on Day Two of Liberty League Tournament

Ithaca, NY – Outside of a solo home run in the first inning, the Clarkson University Baseball team's offense was silenced by pitching from Rensselaer, as the Golden Knights lost 10-1 on Friday morning on day two of the Liberty League Tournament, hosted by Ithaca College at Booth Field on the campus of Cornell University.

The Golden Knights saw their season's record fall to 18-15 on the year, while RPI moved to 26-14.

Things started off well for the Knights in the first when Cam Jerrett hit a full count pitch over the left centerfield wall for a solo home run. However, Clarkson's hits were scattered the rest of the way, only putting multiple runners on in the seventh inning when one of those was erased by a double play.

RPI took the lead in the top half of the second with a three-run homer from Julian Scarpa and then added two more in the third on a throwing error after an infield single and again on a bases loaded walk. Both teams' offenses were shut down for the next few innings, but a sacrifice fly from Kameron Levesque in the top of the seventh broke the string of goose eggs and made the score 6-1. Virtually all hope of a comeback for the Knights was quashed when Ian Oehlschlaeger belted a grand slam to right, putting the tally at 10-1.

Liam Riordan picked up the win, striking out eight with no walks and allowing just six hits in seven innings for the Engineers, and RPI got scoreless innings from two relievers to close out the game. Nicholas Hofacker took the loss for Clarkson, giving up six hits and four earned runs in four frames. Nathan Hartley pitched the next three innings and struck out three, while Ryan Petrie, Mateo Sarabia, and Carter Gould each pitched to a handful of batters to close out the contest.

Six different players recorded a hit for the Knights, with Jerrett accounting for the only run with his solo shot in the first.
