Cartier's Line Drive Single Gives Knights Second Walk-Off Win of Series, Clarkson Advances to Liberty League Tournament

Potsdam, NY – Junior CJ Cartier's line drive single to left in the 10th gave the Clarkson University Baseball team its second walk-off hit of the weekend as the Golden Knights advanced to the Liberty League Tournament with an 8-7 victory in the deciding game three of its crossover series against Union College on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 18-13 on the year and move on to the conference tournament for the first time since 2022, joining Ithaca College, Skidmore College, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as all four top seeds reached the double-elimination tournament. Union saw its season come to an end at 22-18.

The 10th inning saw each team capable of scoring runs, as Tommy DiFranco entered the game with a couple of runners on. After a bunt and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Clarkson was able to get out of the jam on a soft tapper to third. CJ Cartier came home for the force and then the hitter was called out at first on interference when the runner came in a little close to Joe Figliolino at the plate. That set up heroics in the bottom half of the inning for the Knights. Figliolino blooped a single to center to start the rally and then pinch-hitter Will Roda worked a six-pitch walk. Following a sacrifice bunt from Beau Vardion to push the runners to second and third, CJ Cartier took an 0-2 pitch from Alex Erickson and ripped a ball to left over the drawn-in infield for the game-winning RBI.

Clarkson never trailed in the contest, scoring five runs in the bottom of the third, all with two outs. With the bases loaded, Figliolino doubled off the bottom of the left field fence to score a pair and then he and Cam Jerrett scored on a single to left by David Harris, making it 4-0. Vardion found an empty space on the left side of the infield with his seeing-eye single to plate Harris, making it 5-0.

Union was finally able to solve Clarkson starter Jacob Shirley in the fifth as Dan Sheeran led off with a walk and Sam Strazza squeaked one over the left-center fence to make it 5-2. Clarkson responded with two in the bottom half of the inning when Figliolino and Vardion were both able to score on CJ Kanick's single to right. Kanick was called out trying to advance to second, but Vardion crossed the plate a half-second before the out was recorded, giving the Knights a run on a timing play.

The Garnet Chargers kept up the offense in the eighth, scoring three times, the first on what seemed to be a harmless fielder's choice from Kyle Zaslaw, but he then finished the circuit when Cooper Ames homered to right, making it 7-5. Union picked up two more in the ninth as well, coming all the way back to tie the contest. Noah DiCaprio doubled in a run when his shot to left was out of the reach of a diving James Mason. Dylan Swarts was next for the Chargers, sending a single to right and tying the contest. Keaveney singled to put runners on first and second. A little tap shot to first was misplayed by CJ Kanick, but Swarts tried to take advantage of the miscue by racing home from second. However, Kanick had plenty of pace on the throw to the dish, and Figliolino swiped a tag on Swarts to end the top half of the frame.

Figliolino was on base three times with a pair of hits and a walk, scoring three times and driving in two. Vardion also had a pair of hits, as did Cartier, including the walk-off game-winner. Both David Harris and Kanick drove in two. Shirley went seven innings and struck out three while giving up eight hits, while Tommy DiFranco picked up the win in relief with a scoreless final inning.

For Union, Noah DiCaprio and Dylan Swarts each delivered three hits and Andrew Keaveney also struck for two hits. The Garnet Chargers used five pitchers in the game, with Alex Erickson taking the loss, giving up just one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.
