Fitzpatrick Sets HR Mark, Knights Sweep Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Senior Devin Fitzpatrick earned a win in game one and homered twice in game two, setting a new program standard for career home runs in the process, as the Clarkson University Softball team swept SUNY Potsdam 11-1 and 11-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-10 on the season while the Bears fell to 7-8. Clarkson is scheduled for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend at home, taking on RIT on Friday and University of Rochester on Saturday.

Fitzpatrick homered for the 15th and 16th times of her career, recording her 16th home run in her 277th career plate appearance. The only other Clarkson hitters to reach double figures needed 401 plate appearances (Michele Winn, 15 home runs) and 355 plate appearances (Sarah Vaccaro, 14 home runs).

In the first game, Clarkson put up two runs in the second, seven in the fourth, and then added two more in the fifth to conclude the game early. The second saw Devin Fitzpatrick open with a double and then score on a one-out single by Lexi Rydelek. Emma Sabourin later delivered a bases loaded single to score Rydelek a few batters later, making it 2-0.

The Knights blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the fourth. Emily Bulone doubled and Elizabeth Greco singled, with both of their pinch runners (Shaelee Torres and Karyssa Parker) scoring on a double to right by Kaya Johnson. After Elissa Uveino singled and stole second, Zoey Kovach's single plated both Johnson and Uveino for a 6-0 score. Isabel Haspil then doubled to right center to plate Kovach and Rydelek went opposite field for a home run, driving in Haspil and herself to make it 9-0.

Potsdam broke through with a triple and sac bunt to put the score at 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Knights plated two more in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run single from Bridget Kerwin.

Fitzpatrick picked up her sixth win of the season, striking out four in five innings. Rydelek finished with a 2-for-3 performance driving in three and scoring twice. Fitzpatrick and Bulone also had a pair of hits in the game.

In game two, Fitzpatrick led off the second inning with a home run, her sixth of the season and the 15th of her career, tying Michele Winn's program mark. Clarkson then put up nine in the fourth to all but put the game away. Fitzpatrick doubled to left with one out, beginning a streak of hits by the Knights. Isabel Haspil drove in a run with a single, Rydelek followed with a single, and Maddie Throumoulos doubled to drive in another run. Bridget Kerwin then tripled in two and scored on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Elissa Uveino singled to center, Zoey Kovach singled to left, and Fitzpatrick homered for the second time in the game to drive in three. In the fifth, Throumoulos recorded her second extra-base hit of the game, tripling home Rydelek for an 11-0 lead.

Fitzpatrick went 3-for-3 with two runs, four RBI, and three extra-base hits. Throumoulos was also 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Amanda Corrice tossed four scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk in that stretch.
