Clarkson Posts Pair of Comeback Wins Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Although the team only held the lead briefly in each two games it did so when it counted most, as the Clarkson University Softball team swept its Liberty League doubleheader against RIT on Friday, taking game on 7-6 in 10 innings and then claiming the night cap 8-6 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 13-10 overall and 3-1 in the Liberty League, while RIT dropped to 5-15 and 0-4. Clarkson hosts University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon.

Game one saw RIT score twice in the third and three more times in the fourth for an early 5-1 lead. Bailey Kehl drove in a run with a single and Maddy Cooke tripled in Kehl for a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third, though the Knights did get a run back in the bottom half of the frame when Emma Sabourin reached on a triple and later scored on a groundout. However, the Tigers responded with three runs in the top of the fourth, as Kristen Hino tripled home Erin Ozminkowski and scored herself a batter later on an error. One more run came round as Sylvia White, who had reached on the error earlier, scored on another Clarkson miscue to make it 5-1.

The Knights began to come back in the bottom of the sixth. Devin Fitzpatrick walked and Lexi Rydelek doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Emily Bulone then singled to center to plate pinch runner Karyssa Parker and a bases loaded walk by Sabourin forced in Kaelyn Buehler to make it 5-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fitzpatrick homered to left-center with one out to get the Knights to within one, setting a new single-season Clarkson standard for homers with her eighth of the season. Isabel Haspil then walked and moved to second on a groundout. Down to their last out, the Knights tied the game when Emily Bulone singled to left to score Haspil.

The two teams then went scoreless in extras before putting runners on second to start the 10th inning. Neither team bothered with bunts, instead using regular swings to score. Hino singled to put runners on the corners and Sylvia White grounded out to allow Ozminkowski to come in from third. With runners on second and third and two outs, Fitzpatrick got a big strikeout to end the RIT threat. Bulone was put on second to start Clarkson's bottom half of the 10th, and she advanced to third on a fly out to center by Greco. Sabourin then followed with a sacrifice fly to nearly the same spot, scoring Bulone to tie the game. Although the bases were empty with two outs, the Knights nevertheless kept the rally going when Kaya Johnson walked. Elissa Uveino then singled and moved up a base when Johnson was able to go first-to-third on the hit. That set up heroics for Zoey Kovach as she delivered a single to right-center to plate Johnson for the walk-off win.

Fitzpatrick got the win, throwing all 10 innings, giving up two earned runs (six total) on 13 hits while striking out 10 batters. Rydelek finished 3-for-5 while both Bulone and Uveino had two hits. Sabourin also reached three times and drove in two runs.

Game two once again saw RIT roll out to an early lead, scoring four times in the second and then two more in the third for a 6-1 edge. Maria Minemier doubled in Maddy Cook to open the scoring and a fielder's choice from Hino drove in Minemier. Emma Merkley later delivered a two-run single to put RIT up 4-0.

Clarkson got one run back in the bottom half of the second when an errant throw pulled the catcher off the plate with the bases loaded, allowing Emma Sabourin's fielder's choice to plate a run. RIT was able to escape that jam with a pitcher-to-catcher-to-first double play, and followed up with two runs in the top of the third, both coming in on a double to left-center by Sylvia White.

Clarkson's offense woke up a bit in the bottom of the third with three runs. Kovach opened with a double on a liner to left and then scored on a double just inside the third base bag by Fitzpatrick, making it 6-2. Isabel Haspil followed with a double to right to score Fitzpatrick, and Haspil came around on a wild pitch to put the score at 6-4.

The Knights utilized some bouts of wildness in the fourth to tie the game. Kaya Johnson started the rally with a one-out single up the middle and then moved to second on a wild pitch. The bases then were loaded with back-to-back walks to Uveino and Kovach, prompting a pitching change. Lexi Pieri was greeted by Fitzpatrick with a grand slam, the ball just clearing the left field wall by about five feet, to give the Knights an 8-6 advantage.

RIT loaded the bases with three infield flares, but one final pop up in the infield was snared by Johnson to end the Tigers' chances in the fifth. Those would be the last base runners for RIT, as Fitzpatrick came on to close out the game, getting four groundouts, an infield popup, and a fly out to center to end the game.

Fitzpatrick got the save for the Knights, tossing two scoreless frames, and Bella Hotchkiss picked up the win by tossing the middle innings for Clarkson. Fitzpatrick also drove in five with two hits and was the only Clarkson player to record multiple hits in the second contest.
