Fitzpatrick Homers Twice, Knights Sweep Union

Schenectady, NY – Devin Fitzpatrick homered twice in game one, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the top of the seventh of game one, to help the Clarkson University Softball team to a sweep of Union College, 8-7 and 14-3, Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 19-12 overall and 7-3 in conference games, while Union fell to 5-17 and 2-8. Clarkson faces Rensselaer in Troy next weekend for a key conference matchup.

The first four runners of the game reached for the Golden Knights, resulting in four runs. Isabel Haspil reached on a walk and Maddie Throumoulos pushed a bunt to the right side to put runners on first and second. Zoey Kovach then delivered a double to left-center to plate the first run for Clarkson, and Devin Fitzpatrick followed with a three-run shot to straight away center, making it 4-0 before Union came to the plate.

The Garnet Chargers would not wilt due to the early deficit, however. Tatum Perkins reached on a leadoff double in the second and advanced the final two bases on a pair of ground outs. Union then gained the lead in the third, scoring once on an RBI single from Riley Callahan, twice on a triple from Carra Cleaves, and the final run scoring on a ground out, giving Union a 5-4 advantage.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth. Clarkson took the lead when Emily Bulone and Elizabeth Greco recorded back-to-back two-out hits, but Union came back with RBI singles from Perkins and Ellie Wintringer.

In the top of the seventh, Clarkson trailed by one, but the Knights had the meat of the order coming to the plate. Zoey Kovach led off the frame with a single and Fitzpatrick sent a soaring shot to left for her second home run of the game. Fitzpatrick then closed the door in the bottom of the seventh, sending Union down in order with two ground outs sandwiched around a fly ball to left.

Fitzpatrick drove in five on her two home runs in game one, giving her 12 on the season. She also recorded the win, striking out two and giving up seven hits in seven innings. Kovach and Bulone each had two hits in the game as well.

In game two, the Knights got on the board first thanks to a two-out single from Devin Fitzpatrick which scored Maddie Throumoulos, who had reached on a double. However, Union picked up three in the bottom of the first on a three-run shot from Ellie Wintringer.

The runs of the first were all either team would score until the fourth, but Clarkson netted 13 runs in the inning, the most that Clarkson has ever scored in a single frame. Clarkson tied the game on two-run double from Lexi Rydelek and then took the lead on a single from Isabel Haspil (4-3). Throumoulos and Fitzpatrick had back-to-back singles for a 6-3 score and then Emily Bulone reached on an error, which would have been the third out of the inning. Clarkson took advantage of the miscue thanks to back-to-back-to-back bases loaded walks for Elizabeth Greco, Bridget Kerwin, and Karyssa Parker. Emma Sabourin then singled home a run, Isabel Haspil drove in two with a single, and Sabourin scored on a passed ball. The final run of the inning came on a Throumoulos single, making it 14-3.

Throumoulos was 3-for-4 in the game, scoring twice and driving in twice. Fitzpatrick, Haspil, and Bulone also had two hits, with Haspil driving home three and scoring twice. Bella Hotchkiss ended up with the win, throwing three scoreless frames with four strikeouts.
