Eight-Run Seventh Gives Knights Split Against RPI

Troy, NY –Big innings created some lopsided scores for both teams, as the Clarkson University Softball team picked up a split against Rensselaer on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 8-1 and dropping game two in five innings 8-0.

The Golden Knights moved to 20-13 overall and 8-4 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers edged forward to 23-9 and 7-5. Holding a tie-breaker over the Engineers due to wins against the top two teams in the conference, Clarkson needs just one win next weekend against Skidmore College to avoid the Liberty League Tournament's play-in game between the four and five seeds.

Not only were runs at a premium in game one, but base runners in general were difficult to find. RPI pushed a run across in the bottom of the first thanks to a one-out single from Evann McDowell providing the Engineers with their first runner of the game, and Callista Adorno followed with a double to left-center to make it 1-0. Clarkson would load the bases in the third off a single, error, and walk, but a pop up ended the threat.

The Knights wouldn't challenge the RPI defense again until the top of the sixth when Zoey Kovach led off with a single. However, Devin Fitzpatrick's fielder's choice eliminated the pinch-runner and two strikeouts ended that opportunity.

The Engineers appeared to have something going when Sarah Decker doubled with one out in the bottom half of the inning, but Clarkson escaped without allowing an insurance run.

Clarkson's offense came out of nowhere to blow the game open in the top of the seventh when nine straight hitters reached base. The streak started harmlessly enough to anyone but Kaya Johnson, who was hit by a pitch with one out. Emma Sabourin then walked and Isabel Haspil singled to load the bases. A single just out of reach of the RPI shortstop from Elissa Uveino tied the game 1-1, and Zoey Kovach blooped in a singled to center to make it 2-1 in Clarkson's favor. Devin Fitzpatrick then reached on an error as two runs came home and Lexi Rydelek's hit reloaded the bases. Emily Bulone followed with a rip down the left field line to plate two runs and Elizabeth Greco dropped one into left center for another two-run double, getting the tally to 8-1.

RPI put runners on first and second, but a looping liner helped get the Knights out of the jam as the middle infield completed a double play.

Kovach, Rydelek, and Haspil each recorded two hits for Clarkson, while Bulone and Greco both drove in two runs with doubles. Fitzpatrick claimed the win, completing the game with seven strikeouts and no walks in seven frames.

Ava Markert was strong for the first six innings, striking out four and giving up just four hits, but she ended up taking the loss and getting pulled with just one out in the inning.

In game two, RPI was able to rush out to an early lead, scoring once in the second and four more times in the third. Maddy Brooks hit a solo home run in the second and hit another solo home run in the third. Prior to Brooks' second solo bomb, Addison Shaffer hit a three-run shot.

In the fifth inning, the Engineers used a throwing error to score twice and then the game was concluded on a sac fly by Lauren Cosselman, which scored Sarah Decker with two outs in the frame.

Brooks and Shaffer combined for five hits and five RBI in the game, while Gaby Heim tossed a one-hitter for RPI, striking out four and giving up a single walk.
