Knights Win on Chagnon's Walk Off Hit in 11th

Potsdam, NY – Freshman James Chagnon singled to right in the bottom of the 11th to end a topsy-turvy contest between the Clarkson University Baseball team and RIT, with the Golden Knights winning on a walk-off 6-5 on Thursday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in the Liberty League, while RIT dropped to 19-9 and 8-5. The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday, beginning at 11:00 am.

The game seesawed back and forth from the start, with Clarkson scoring once in the first and once in the fourth, while RIT picked up a run in the third and the fifth, before briefly taking the lead in the seventh. Clarkson started things off with a run in the bottom of the first as Cam Jerrett singled home Aidan Kuefner, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The Tigers matched Clarkson's run in the third thanks to a single through the left side by Jackson Rusiecki which plated Isaac Breagelman after he had put himself in scoring position with a one-out double.

Beau Vardion doubled to left center in the fourth to put Clarkson back up a run, but the Tigers responded in the next half inning when Randy Dodig singled through the right side to score John Bagley. RIT took its first lead of the game in the top of the seventh Dodig and Rusiecki reached on a single and walk, respectively, and were pushed into scoring position on a sac bunt. After Jarin Moses was immediately walked intentionally to load the bases for a force out at each base, Charlie Slaymaker singled between the shortstop and third baseman to make it 3-2. Adam Marsh then followed with a deep fly to center to send Rusiecki home and give the Tigers a two-run advantage. Clarkson picked up three in the bottom half of the frame, however, as the Knights strung together a number of hits to the outfield. Will Roda opened with a walk and pinch-runner Colby Fox moved to third on Seth Albert's single to left center, with Albert also moving up on the throw. Aidan Kuefner did the same, scoring Fox. Two batters later, Cam Jerrett singled to right to score another run, and a fielder's choice gave the Knights the lead when Kuefner got out of a pickle between third and home.

In the top of the ninth, Caelen Kim hit a hard shot down the left field line and circled the bases when his poke just hit the bottom of the foul pole for a home run. With the bases loaded the next inning and just one out, it appeared as if RIT might pick up the go-ahead run, but Ryan Petrie struck out the four-five hitters to escape the jam. Clarkson likewise nearly ended the game twice in the bottom of the ninth and tenth innings, but Christopher Griggs liner to third was snagged in the latter and Seth Albert's lined shot to second ending the other threat.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, Joe Figliolino reached on an error to start the winning rally. Two batters later, CJ Cartier singled down the left field line as the hit scattered chalk and put runners on the corners. Late inning defensive replacement James Chagnon then ripped a walk-off hit to right, allowing Figliolino to trot home with the game-winning run.

Cam Jerrett finished 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI and Beau Vardion was 3-for-4 with a run driven in. David Harris and Seth Albert also were 2-for-5 for Clarkson. Cole Riskin struck out five in 5.2 innings of work, Nathan Hartley worked the next 2.2 innings, and Ryan Petrie claimed the win with three strikeouts in the final 2.2 innings.

For RIT, Randy Dodig and Jackson Rusiecki each went 3-for-5 at the top of the Tigers lineup. Ryan Merkov threw the first five innings before getting relieved by Owen Fisher. Fisher then tossed five more innings of relief, striking out five. Ryan Moran took the loss for the Knights, giving up the unearned run in the bottom of the 11th.
