Knights Come Back in Game One of Friday Doubleheader, Split with RIT

Potsdam, NY – One late-game comeback almost turned into two, but the Clarkson University Baseball team ended up splitting its doubleheader with RIT on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 9-7 and then losing game two 13-11 in 10 innings at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-11 on the season and 5-6 in Liberty League contests, while RIT salvaged game three of the series to go to 20-10 and 9-6. Clarkson has a non-league doubleheader at Russell Sage College on Tuesday before playing St. Lawrence in a three-game set net weekend.

Things did not start off well for the Knights in game one as RIT scored three unearned runs in the first, with two coming around on Roberto Reade's single to left. In the third, A double steal allowed Jarin Moses to take home when he broke late on the throw, and Reade drove home Charlie Slaymaker with another base hit to make it 5-0.

Clarkson got back into the game in the fourth thanks to back-to-back run scoring hits from Seth Albert and Aidan Kuefner, putting the tally at 5-2. In the sixth, the Tigers regained their five-run lead on an RBI single from Randy Dodig and a sac fly by Caelen Kim, but the Knights got the runs right back off a sac fly from Will Roda and an RBI ground out by Seth Albert.

The Knights continued to chip away with two runs in the seventh. CJ Cartier grounded out to short, but it was enough to plate Cam Jerrett from third. A chopper down the third base line from David Harris, his fourth hit of the game, resulted in a double for the freshman and another run when Joe Figliolino crossed the plate. Clarkson then took the lead for the first time in the game in the eighth frame. Will Roda started the rally with a single up the middle and Seth Albert reached on a bunt single. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in an out which eliminated the lead runner, Cam Jerrett singled to right to load the bases. Figliolino then singled to center to score Albert and Kuefner. A sac fly on a ball to deep right from Beau Vardion plated an insurance run for the Knights, making it 9-7. Jason McGee then made sure that a leadoff single by Jarin Moses was all RIT would get, inducing three fly ball outs to end the contest.

McGee picked up the win by throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, improving to 3-1 on the year. Harris went 4-for-5 in the game and Figliolino was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Seth Albert and Cam Jerrett also produced multi-hit games for the Knights.

For RIT, Randy Dodig was 3-for-4 while Roberto Reade had a pair of hits and drove in three.

Game two started the same as the opener of the doubleheader as the Knights watched RIT push three across. Caelen Kim doubled in a run and then a throwing error scored two more. Clarkson picked a run back up in the second on an RBI hit from David Harris, but the Tigers broke the game open with five runs in the fourth. Dodig singled in one, Jackson Rusiecki drove in another on a sac fly, and Jarin Moses cleared the left-center fence by about 10 feet for a three-run homer to make it 8-1.

In the sixth, Clarkson scored six to get back into the game, but only one of the runs was unearned. Beau Vardion singled in a run, but consecutive errors allowed Harris and Chagnon to reach, with each of those errors pushing a run across. Seth Albert was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to force in a run and Aidan Kuefner's reached on a fielder's choice to keep the inning alive while also picking up an RBI. Cam Jerrett then drove in a run with a sac fly to right to make it 8-7.

RIT answered with two more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of a bases loaded hit by pitch to Jarin Moses and a bases loaded walk to Charlie Slaymaker. The Knights gained a run in the bottom of the seventh when David Harris's hit ticked off the glove of Dodig and scored Vardion from second base. The Knights also picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth on Cam Jerrett's two-out single, and in the bottom of the ninth, Beau Vardion's hard single up the middle was misplayed in center, allowing Joe Figliolino to score all the way from first.

The momentum on Clarkson's side heading in to extras, it was RIT that struck for three more in the 10th. A bases loaded walk to Jackson Rusiecki forced in a run and Caelen Kim lined a single over the head of Cartier at third to score two more. Clarkson got a sac fly from Figliolino in the bottom half of the inning, but that was the second out and the Knights ended the game with a runner on.

Vardion finished game two going 4-for-5 with two runs scored while Jerrett, Figliolino, Cartier, and Harris each had two hits. For RIT, Dodig scored three times and reached on two walks with one hit, Caelen Kim drove in three on three hits, Moses posted four RBI, and Slaymaker was 2-for-4.
