Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

SLU Scores Five in Fourth Quarter to Down Clarkson, 9-7

Canton, NY – A five-goal fourth quarter turned out to be the difference in the Route 11 rivalry between the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and St. Lawrence University, as the Golden Knights found themselves on the short end of a 9-7 Liberty League decision on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 8-6 overall and 1-4 in the Liberty League with two games remaining on the regular-season slate, including a road game at Ithaca College this Saturday. St. Lawrence picked up a key win in league to move to 9-4 and 4-1.

As has been the case with prior Liberty League contests in April involving the Golden Knights, the scoring started off slow, which is unsurprising since the conference boasts some of the top defenses in the country. St. Lawrence ended the first quarter with a 2-1 lead, but the final six minutes were without a goal. Clarkson gained the lead in the second with a pair of goals just 40 seconds apart from Connor Matthews and Ethan Hopkins, but the Saints responded a few minutes later with two straight goals with a similar gap between them. While up a player after a St. Lawrence penalty, Andrew Kearney tied the game at 6:50, and the Knights went back up at the 1:12 mark when Kearney connected with Robert Fox, helping Clarkson into the break with a one-goal lead (5-4).

Connor Matthews scored at 4:21 in the third to put the Knights ahead by two, 6-4, as the Saints struggled to solve Clarkson's defense, going the entirety of the third quarter without a goal. St. Lawrence went nearly 27 minutes without a goal until David Herlihy converted at 11:42 in the fourth, beginning a run for the Saints that saw them go back up. Bobby Wells scored on a man-up at 11:24, Herlihy scored at 7:11, and Wells scored again at 4:49 to make it 8-6. Robert Fox stopped the run with a goal roughly 90 seconds later. However, the Saints won the ensuring faceoff and were able to hold the ball following a penalty. Trying to eliminate clock, the Saints helped themselves by waiting until the close of the penalty before starting the offense, and the team scored in the waning seconds of the opportunity, taking a 9-7 lead with just over a minute to go. Possession was traded a few times in the final minute, but the Knights could not get any shots off until the closing whistles.

Clarkson outshot SLU 39-26 overall and 21-15 in shots on goal and the Knights committed 20 turnovers to St. Lawrence's 30. The Saints held the edge on faceoffs (15-5) and that was essentially the difference in groundballs (39-29).

Robert Fox finished with four points on two goals and two assists and Connor Matthews had three points with a pair of goals and one helper. Andrew Kearney also had two points with a goal and an assist. Both Matt Szwagulinski and Dylan Coan caused three turnovers and picked up three groundballs and Griffin Emerson had six saves.

For St. Lawrence, Bobby Wells scored three times and helped on three others while Jamie Rosenzweig had four points on two goals and two assists. Padraic Condon was 14-for-19 on faceoffs with 11 groundballs and Sam Smith caused four turnovers. Michael Marinello was big in the Saints' crease, making 14 stops on 21 shots on goal.
