Two Late Scores Send Knights to Loss at Ithaca, 11-10

Ithaca, NY – Two minutes into Saturday's contest the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team held the lead and never trailed until the final seconds, as the Golden Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Ithaca College, 11-10, in Liberty League action at Ithaca's Higgins Stadium.

With the loss, the Golden Knights were eliminated from postseason contention, falling to 8-7 overall and 1-5 in the Liberty League, while Ithaca moved forward to 9-7 and 3-3. Clarkson faces Vassar College in the regular-season finale next Saturday at Hantz Field.

Ithaca scored twice in the final 20 seconds of the game. After Clarkson's Connor Matthews was denied on a shot in the final minute, the Bombers raced up the field and called a timeout. Out of the break, the Bombers didn't take much time setting up a play, instead getting a hard shot from the left side out of the stick of Ethan Adrid to tie the game at 10-10. Off the ensuing faceoff, the Bombers again gained possession and rushed towards the goal, with Lucas Proctor finding the back of the net with a little over 10 seconds remaining.

The game started off with the Knights getting a goal from Alex Seiler at 13:04, but neither team could score again in the opening quarter until Connor Matthews found Seiler with 6.6 remaining to make it 2-0. Two quick goals from Ithaca tied the game, but the Knights took advantage of some penalties on Ithaca, scoring twice on the man-up in a stretch of less than two minutes, with scores coming from Andrew Kearney and Connor Holly. The two teams then traded goals in the final six minutes to put Clarkson up 5-3 at the break.

The Knights won the third quarter as well, maintaining at least a two-goal lead throughout the period. Midway through the fourth, Matthews and Seiler connected again for a 10-6 advantage with seven minutes left to play. However, Tim Rogers scored three times in less than three minutes to pull the Bombers back within one and put pressure on the Clarkson offense. The Knight possessed the ball for much of the final three and a half minutes and appeared to have all the momentum when Griffin Emerson dove out of his goal following a wide shot to give Clarkson the ball once again. After Matthews was denied at the net in the final 40 seconds, Ithaca was able to make its unfathomable rush to win the contest.

Matthews finished with six points on four goals and two assists while Fox had a goal and three helpers. Both Seiler and Kearney scored twice for Clarkson as well. Jack Garvey caused two turnovers and had three groundballs, while Griffin Emerson made 13 saves for the Knights.

Ithaca's offense was led by the four assists of Kyle Proctor and three goals from Tim Rogers. Corey White had 13 groundballs and Andrew Minard made seven saves for the Bombers.
