Haspil Plates Six in Knights Split Versus Oswego

Oswego, NY – Sophomore Isabel Haspil drove in six runs, including a grand slam in game one, to help the Clarkson University Softball team earn a split against Oswego State, winning the first 13-2 and dropping the second 5-4 on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their mark go to 7-9 on the year while Oswego moved to 6-8. Clarkson is next scheduled to host SUNY Canton on Wednesday, April 2nd.

Game one saw the Knights score in four of five innings, each time putting multiple runs on the scoreboard. In the top of the first, things began with a two-out double by Isabel Haspil to plate Elissa Uveino, and Haspil and Zoey Kovach came around on a single by Elizabeth Greco to put the Knights up 3-0 before the Lakers had an at bat. Oswego did pick up a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ellie Mahoney, which scored Lillian Haggerty who had reached on an error.

Clarkson tacked on two more runs in the top of the third, starting with a leadoff home run from Devin Fitzpatrick, her fifth of the season. Isabel Haspil then doubled and later swapped places with Lexi Rydelek to make it 5-1. In the bottom half of the third, the Lakers scored once again thanks to a Grace DiPalma triple and stolen base.

In the fourth, the Knights scored five runs to create a situation where the game could end early due to the eight-run rule. A grand slam by Haspil made it 9-2 and Elizabeth Greco scored on a wild pitch for one more run. Clarkson made sure the contest would stop early with three more in the fifth, as Karissa Parker scored on a wild pitch, Kaelyn Buehler came around on an error, and a fielder's choice by Rydelek plated Shaelee Torres.

Haspil finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five driven in thanks to a pair of doubles and a homer. Greco was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Rydelek was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Devin Fitzpatrick gained the win with five innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) with a pair of strikeouts.

Clarkson's bats were quieted in game two, though Clarkson stayed close through the first portion of the contest. The Knights picked up a run in the top of the first when Haspil singled in Zoey Kovach, who had reached on an error two batters earlier, to make it 1-0. Mattison Phinney drove in a run in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, and the Lakers went ahead on a double by Tahlia Gerardi which scored Haggerty.

Three innings later the Knights tied the game on an error when Haspil scored, but the knot was a brief one since the Lakers scored three in the bottom of the frame. With one out and runners on second and third, Haggerty tripled to score two and then came home on the play to make it 5-2.

Clarkson had a shot at tying the contest in the top of the seventh as Maddie Throumoulos led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Rydelek. A sac bunt from Kaya Johnson plated Throumoulos and sent Sabourin to third, setting up an RBI single for Elissa Uveino to draw the Knights back to within one. However, a pop up and a line out ended the threat and the game.
