Knights Split in Home Opener with SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Three RBI by Emma Sabourin, including a walk-off to shorten the first game, helped the Clarkson University Softball team earn a split in the season-opener at Scott Field on Thursday as the Golden Knights won the first game 9-1 against SUNY Potsdam before dropping game two 6-0.

The Golden Knights saw their record go to 6-8 on the year while the Bears stayed even at 5-5. Clarkson takes on another SUNYAC foe Friday afternoon, this time on the road at Oswego State.

In game one, the Knights scored at least one run in four of their five trips to the plate. Clarkson picked up the first run of the contest when Zoey Kovach grounded out to plate Kaya Johnson, who had led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Potsdam responded with a run in the top half of the second thanks to an RBI single from Sam Horne to plate Lexi Cottrill, but that was all the offense that the Bears would muster.

Clarkson pulled away with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth. Kaya Johnson singled home Shaelee Torres for what proved to be the game-winning run in the third, and Johnson scored on a hit from Elissa Uveino. Devin Fitzpatrick later hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to plate Uveino, making it 4-1. In the fourth, Emma Sabourin ripped a two-run double and Fitzpatrick delivered a two-run single.

The Knights ended the game early in the fifth when they extended their lead to eight runs. Emily Bulone singled and advance to second a wild pitch. Karyssa Parker then entered the game as a pinch-runner and ripped around the bases on Sabourin's single to make it 9-1.

Sabourin finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and Kaya Johnson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the first contest. Bella Hotchkiss picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing just three hits with no walks.

Game two was scoreless until the fifth, though the Knights had their chances with a runner on third base in both the first and second innings. Kiara Lovejoy doubled to right to plate Rebecca Holmes for the first run for the Bears in the top of the fifth, while Sam Horne scored on an RBI groundout from Kelsey Bennett to make it 2-0.

Potsdam broke the game open with four runs in the sixth. The first run scored when Potsdam feigned a stolen base attempt, though the Knights would not fall for the ruse, throwing the ball straight to Isabel Haspil, who never left her position at second. That would allow just enough of a window for Karissa Donnelly to score once the ball was thrown, beating the return toss to home. Lovejoy plated Potsdam's fourth run with a lined shot off Lexi Rydelek's glove at first base and Alexys Rosick plated a pair with a two-run single.
