Knights Come Up Short 2-1 at Cornell

Ithaca, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team got on the board first but the Golden Knights offense was quiet afterwards and fell short in a 2-1 decision against Cornell University on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.

The Golden Knights, ranked ninth in the latest USCHO poll, fell to 19-10-1 and 10-8-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while Cornell, ranked fifth in the polls, pushed its mark to 17-4-4 and 13-2-3. Clarkson will be back at home next weekend, hosting Princeton and Quinnipiac.

The skaters came out flying in the early going, but despite the quick pace few offensive chances emerged. Cornell's best chances in the opening period were broken up before they challenged Clarkson's Holly Gruber as those that did make it on net for the Big Red were usually from far enough out that Gruber had ample time to react. Clarkson did likewise in the early going, though a flurry of shots just prior to the midway point certainly put a scare in Cornell's defense, including a denial off a Shelby Laidlaw shot at 7:24 that was smothered by Annelies Bergmann.

The Golden Knights would get on the scoreboard shortly after the first media break of the game, turning what seemed to be some harmless transition into a 2-on-1. In the Clarkson defensive end, Rhea Hicks was able to collect possession and chip the puck off the left side boards just before a Cornell forward could squeeze off the hole. That miss created Clarkson's 2-on-1, with Sena Catterall skating in from the left side circle and going across the slot with a backhand, just sneaking the puck between the butterfly pads of Bergmann at 12:03.

Much like the first period, shots were sporadic in the second, though Clarkson did get a good run of attempts during a power play chance midway through the stanza. Cornell also ended up on the power play late in the period, and the Big Red's opportunity came to fruition late. The Knights did a good job of limiting the chances, though Karel Prefontaine and Avi Adam came close, with the former hitting a post and the latter getting denied by Gruber. After a long hold in the corner by the Knights, the puck squeaked out and allowed Cornell to regroup with a hard one-timer from the top of the left circle sneaking past Gruber five-hole in the waning seconds of the penalty kill.

In the third, the two teams traded penalties, creating power plays for each as well as a lengthy 4-on-4, though not much came in the way of offense. Shortly after the end of Clarkson's brief extra-skater chance, the Knights nearly got on the board again with Caroline Goffredo on the doorstop near the right post, but a key block from Alyssa Regalado kept the Knights even with the Big Red.

The game-winner for Cornell came late in the period on somewhat of a fluke play. Gabbie Rud skated in on the right side and was defended well as she ended up below the goal line. In an attempt to keep the offensive play alive before a clutter could occur on the boards behind the net, Rud flipped the puck back in front, but it deflected off the back of Gruber and just stayed inside the goal as it rested inside the opposite post for a goal at 14:08.

In the final two minutes, Clarkson twice pulled Gruber for an extra attacker but most of the attempts by the Knights went wide of the target.

Clarkson finished with a 28-22 edge in shots on goal while trailing overall 49-43. Cornell was 1-for-4 on the power play and Clarkson was held scoreless in three chances. Gruber ended up with 20 saves while Bergmann had 27 stops.
