Knights Strong From Service Line in Four-Set Win at RIT

Rochester, NY – Sixteen aces, including four apiece from Olivia Baxter, Conley Burns, and Jordyn Leader, highlighted the performance of the Clarkson University Volleyball team on Friday evening as the Golden Knights downed RIT in four sets 25-13, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-10 on the season and 2-3 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers fell to 6-13 and 1-5. Clarkson will take a break from conference games on Saturday, facing University of Rochester, hosted at RIT.

The Golden Knights never trailed and were never really challenged in the first set by the Tigers. Clarkson opened with the first four points and eight of the first nine. RIT briefly got back within five, but the Knights were up by double figures at 14-4 following an ace from Jordyn Leader. The advantage hovered around 10 for the remainder of the set, as Clarkson's offense hummed along at a .355 clip (13-2-31) with six aces.

The second set started similarly to the first, as Clarkson rolled out to an 9-2 lead after an ace from Natasha Aguirre and an attack error by the Tigers. RIT finally got on a bit of a roll after a timeout, capitalizing mostly on Clarkson errors. The Tigers pulled to within one (9-8) after another Clarkson miscue, but the Knights responded with a solid run of their own, pushing the margin back to 14-9 following a kill from Conley Burns. That would be the end of the Clarkson run, though, with RIT picking up six straight points, including a pair of kills from Mia Gerber to give RIT its first lead of the match at 15-14. The streakiness did not end there, however. RIT led by two (19-17), only to watch the Knights rattle off five straight points, putting Clarkson on the verge of taking the second set. RIT responded with six straight points of its own, beginning with two kills from Anna Wasula and ending with an ace and an attack error at 25-22.

In the third set, neither team could gain much of a foothold against the other, as the points seesawed back and forth. Clarkson finally built a five-point lead after an ace from Olivia Baxter and an attack error by the Tigers (16-11). The Knights held that advantage for the next few points until RIT once again crawled back to within striking distance, down by just one on a couple of occasions, including 23-22. Clarkson took a timeout at that point and came out with block assists from Ashley Currier and Jordyn Leader to create a set point. Leader took it from there, delivering an ace to end the third game.

Clarkson never trailed in the fourth set, holding at least a modest advantage before either team reached 10 points. However, it was at that point that the Knights asserted themselves and pulled away. Leading 8-6, Clarkson began its run with a block from Ashley Currier and then scored six more points in a row, capped by a kill from Conley Burns to put the tally at 15-6. Though the Tigers briefly halted the run when an error by the Knights game the home team a reprieve, Clarkson continued to roll along and eventually pushed the margin to 12 (19-7). RIT got things going its way again, but the margin was too much for the Tigers to overcome as Clarkson closed out the set and the match.

Three Clarkson hitters registered nine kills as Grace Hanson, Marin Hangliter, and Conley Burns each picked up nine. Ashley Currier added seven kills and 33 assists and Jordyn Leader contributed seven more kills for a .375 hitting percentage to go along with five block assists. Olivia Baxter led the defense with 17 digs.

For RIT, Anna Wasula delivered 21 kills on a .294 hitting percentage, but the rest of the team collectively hit 18-22-75 (-0.53). Isabel Leon contributed seven block assists.
