Blocks Aplenty for Knights in Five-Set Win Over Rochester

Rochester, NY - Jordyn Leader and Ashley Currier were a tough combination at the net, combining for 12 total blocks as the Clarkson University Volleyball team outlasted University of Rochester in five sets, 25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11 on the campus of RIT.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 10-10 on the season while the Yellowjackets snapped back to 3-16. Clarkson is at home next weekend, facing Bard College on Friday and then hosting Union College and Buffalo State on Saturday.

The final scores of each set were indicative of how close each of the sets were. In the opener, the two teams jostled back and forth with the advantage and consecutive block assists from Lilly Kraemer and Sancia Williams put Rochester up by one late (23-22). However, an error by the Yellowjackets and back-to-back kills from Ainslie Reimer ended the first set.

Set two appeared to be less of an issue for the Knights, as Clarkson led by six after a triple-block from Marin Hangliter, Reimer, and Currier. A few moments later, the Knights were up by seven (22-15) after consecutive kills from Reimer and Hangliter, giving the Knights an ample lead. It would turn out that Clarkson would need it as the Knights led 24-19, only to see Rylee Bergeron pick up a kill and three straight aces before Paige Stephenson tied the game at 24 with another kill. Fortunately for Clarkson, Hangliter and Conley Burns put down kills to end the game.

A sweep looked likely in the third when the Knights led 17-10 following a kill from Grace Hanson, but Rochester rattled off eight straight to take the lead. Another three-point run late, capped by a kill from Bergeron, made it set point for the Yellowjackets and they held on for a three-point win.

Though Clarkson had an early lead in the fourth set, Rochester led by a handful of points throughout the majority of the game. Every time the Knights got back to within one, the Yellowjackets had an answer, including a combined block from Ellen Porter and Sancia Williams to end the set.

Other than the opening point of the fifth set, Clarkson led for the majority of the deciding game. A block by Lilly Kraemer drew the Yellowjackets to within one (9-8), but Clarkson picked up the key points when it was necessary. An emphatic block by Currier and Leader made it 13-10 and Hangliter delivered a strong serve on the next point to create match point. Though Rochester scored once, Conley Burns deflected her attack attempt off a Rochester defender and into the bench area to end the match.

Clarkson was busy at the net, producing a total of 18 blocks, none of them solo efforts. There were 37 block assists for the Knights, including the rare triple-block. Jordyn Leader had 14 block assists to go along with her seven kills, Ashley Currier produced 10 block assists and had a near quadruple-double with 31 assists, 16 digs, 10 blocks, and 9 kills. Marin Hangliter knocked down 16 kills and also added 18 digs and six block assists. Olivia Baxter also tossed in 33 digs.

For Rochester, Rylee Bergeron was a tough assignment, producing 25 kills, 23 digs, and 7 aces with a .295 hitting percentage (25-7-61). Myla Nover-Estes tossed in 17 kills and Sancia Williams added 10 kills and five block assists. Iliana Balaskas notched 52 assists and 24 digs, and Lydia Weeks recorded 31 digs.
