Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late Goal, Overtime Score Sees Clarkson Come Up Short at Colgate, 2-1

Hamilton, NY – Only a handful of seconds separated the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team from back-to-back 1-0 victories, but an extra-attacker goal and then an overtime score allowed Colgate University to escape with a 2-1 extra session victory against the Golden Knights on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 19-9-1 and 10-7-0 while Colgate edged forward to 23-6-0 and 14-3-0 in ECAC Hockey contests. Clarkson faces Cornell University on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson dominated the first two periods and most of the contest with a lopsided advantage in shots on goal at 57-31 (85-51 total shots), but a late score with the goalie pulled and an overtime score by Kaia Malachino saw the Knights come up short. Roughly halfway through overtime, a stretch pass eluded two Clarkson defenders to create a breakaway opportunity for Malachino, and she delivered by going five-hole on Holly Gruber at 2:25 in overtime.

Clarkson set the tone for its game plan right off the opening faceoff with constant offensive pressure. Just seconds into the game, Anne Cherkowski rifled a shot at Hannah Murphy, which was the message of the period for the Golden Knights, as the Green and Gold tossed 22 shots on goal in the first 20 minutes. Many of those chances came during Clarkson's power play chance late in the period. In a stretch of 35 seconds, numerous chances challenged Murphy, including a couple from Sydney Fess and then a tip in try by Caroline Goffredo with the rebound eventually getting covered up by Murphy.

The Knights dominated the stat sheet in every way but the scoreboard, having a significant advantage in shots on goal at 22-8 and in faceoffs won at 10-1.

The second period was more of the same, though Colgate's defense continued to make blocks and Murphy kept on making saves, including another power play chance early on. Even when Colgate had an extra skater with a penalty near the midway point of the stanza, the Raiders were whistled for one to even things up at 4-4 and shortly thereafter another call gave Clarkson a 5-on-3. Colgate's defense stood up to the test at the start, but eventually the Knights broke through in the waning seconds of the second penalty. Madison Chantler collected a soft pass off the boards from Jenna Goodwin at the top of the right circle and skated closer in open space. Chantler then either whiffed on a try in the circle or put together an incredible deke on the Colgate defense, but either way it worked as she was able to put a clean shot on the Colgate goal. Murphy made the initial save, but Goffredo was there for the rebound, flipping the puck in with only a few seconds left on the power play.

Colgate had an opportunity to tie early in the third period when Clarkson was called for a penalty, but it turned out that the Golden Knights would have the best scoring chance. Near the end of power play, Jenna Goodwin, tapped the puck off the boards and used her speed to create a breakaway, but Murphy was able to make the save when Goodwin tried to go across the crease for her forehand.

The Raiders had their best chance of the game right after the media timeout when a turnover behind the net turned into a shot from the slot right outside the crease by Emma Pais, but Holly Gruber was there to keep the game 1-0. The momentum could have shifted with the renewed energy for Colgate, except the Knights immediately went back on the attack to continue challenging Hannah Murphy.

Colgate was looking to pull Murphy late in the contest, but Clarkson's defense played high to put constant pressure on the Raiders as the home team was unable to get the puck past the neutral zone for nearly 90 seconds. Eventually Colgate did and very late in a 6-on-5, the Raiders tied the contest.

Although the zone was cleared, Colgate was able to keep everyone onside as the team reset the offense, which allowed Alexis Petford to take a wrist shot from near the left circle and slot, going top shelf with only 10 seconds to go in regulation.

Gruber finished with 29 saves in her bid for consecutive shutouts, while Murphy ended up with 56 saves for Colgate. Clarkson was 1-for-4 on the power play and held Colgate scoreless in two power play chances.
