Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gruber Records 4th Shutout, PPG in Third Lifts Knights Past SLU, 1-0

Canton, NY – One day after a record-setting goal total between the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and St. Lawrence University, the Golden Knights scored a power-play goal midway through the third period as the only score of the contest, skating away with a 1-0 win against St. Lawrence in ECAC Hockey action at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked ninth in the latest USCHO poll, improved to 19-8-1 overall and 10-6-0 in league contests, while the seventh-rated Saints dropped to 16-7-5 and 10-3-3 in conference. Clarkson will be on the road next weekend to take on two more of the top three teams in the ECAC, facing Colgate University and Cornell University.

The first period saw both teams come out flying and skating hard for the second game in as many days of the series. Despite the pace, not many great chances emerged for either team, though a transition chance about five minutes in nearly had the first goal of the game. Madison Chantler was denied by Emma-Sofie Nordstrom and the rebound found the stick of Caroline Goffredo on the opposite side of the crease. However, Claire Tyo came sliding in to block the shot of Goffredo and keep the game scoreless. Clarkson ended the period with a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal and held St. Lawrence to just one shot on its power play opportunity near the end of the stanza.

Each team had chances on the power play in the second period, though St. Lawrence was only able to get one shot during its second opportunity of the game. Clarkson had an extended power play and was even on the 5-on-3 for 61 seconds, but only one chance made it on the cage in that time, with the best opportunity actually being a shot that went wide from Haley Winn. St. Lawrence had one more grade-a chance while the two teams were even around the six-minute mark, but Clarkson's defense broke up a wide-open one-timer for Anna Segedi.

The third period saw the lone goal of the contest as the Knights ended a brief slump on the power play, scoring while up a skate for the first time in their last seven tries. The play started on a high shot from Haley Winn in the slot and the puck was quickly gathered up by Nicole Gosling to keep the power play alive in the SLU defensive end. Two touches send the puck back behind the net for Rhea Hicks, who made a move forward towards the net and dropped the puck back for Anne Cherkowski. Though Cherkowski's shot from in close was saved by Nordstrom, Rhea Hicks took advantage of a SLU defender diving in front to also block Cherkowski's shot. Now with only one other player with which to contend for the rebound, Hicks was able to flip the puck over Nordstrom for the power-play marker at 8:40.

St. Lawrence had some solid tries late in the contest in an attempt to tie the game. Clarkson killed off one penalty and then held on for 80 more seconds once Nordstrom was pulled for the extra attacker. Holly Gruber made some fine saves point blank and the last shot from the point was blocked by Sena Catterall and Cherkowski to end the game.

Clarkson finished with a 27-18 edge in shots on goal and a 60-47 lead in total shots. The Knights went 1-for-3 on the power play and the Saints were held scoreless in their three opportunities. Holly Gruber posted 18 saves for her fourth shutout in eight starts this season, while Nordstrom stopped 27 shots for SLU.
