Redirected Shot Gives SLU a 6-5 Win Over Knights

Potsdam, NY – After seeing both teams score with solid offensive skill throughout the contest, it was a fluke goal that turned out to be the game-winner, as St. Lawrence outlasted the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team 6-5 on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked ninth in the latest USCHO poll, fell to 18-8-1 overall and 9-6-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while seventh-ranked St. Lawrence improved to 16-6-5 and 10-2-3. The two teams will matchup again on Saturday at Appleton.

The final goal of the highest scoring game in nearly 80 meetings between the two teams came in the final four minutes. St. Lawrence had the puck in the Clarkson defensive zone after a failed clear attempt and the puck was centered and tipped towards the net. Abby Hustler stood tall in the slot with a Clarkson defender, but neither really made a play on the puck, with the tipped pass going off Hustler's skate and just inside the post for the goal at 16:12. Following a review, it was ruled that there was no intent by Hustler and the goal stood.

Hustler's goal was the last of a wild contest. Only four goals were scored in the first two meetings between the teams back in the fall of 2024, but that many goals found the back of the net in the first period. Clarkson got on the scoreboard first less than three minutes into the game when Rhea Hicks won a faceoff on the left side in St. Lawrence territory. Sydney Fess didn't get the shot off that she sought, but her attempt ended up tipping off a SLU defender's skate. Anne Cherkowski picked up the loose puck and quickly slipped the puck through the Saints' defense before it could recover and the Knights led 1-0 at 2:26.

St. Lawrence tied the game less than a minute later while on the power play. The puck was worked around the perimeter and eventually went to the right dot for a one-timer. That shot was stopped by Clarkson goaltender Adreanna Doucette, but two more attempts finally got past Doucette and diving Clarkson defenders with Anna Segedi finishing off the play at 3:20.

Eleven minutes later, the Saints scored twice in a span of less than 10 seconds to put the score at 3-1. The first of those goals again came on the power play as Kennedy Wilson tapped in a shot at the top of the crease after the first attempt was stopped from the high slot. The Saints scored only eight seconds later, despite Clarkson winning the faceoff. A quick steal created a 3-on-3 transition for St. Lawrence, with Segedi tipping in a pass from the right side at 14:16.

Clarkson led in total shot attempts 30-9 in the first period, though the shots on goal were closer at 12-7.

Just like St. Lawrence scored two quick goals in the first period, Clarkson had the same kind of fortune on very similar offensive pushes. The first of the two goals came off a pass to Jenna Goodwin in the neutral zone and she simply outskated the St. Lawrence defense, flying up the left side and scoring against Emma-Sofie Nordstrom with a shot five-hole. Eighteen seconds later it was the same with Cherkowski picking up possession in nearly the same spot. Cherkowski decided to go back into the slot and her shot ended up going off a pipe, but Rhea Hicks was there for the rebound, tying the game at 2:43.

The Saints reclaimed the lead about six minutes later, with Sarah Marchand taking the puck in deep on the right side and backhanding a pass through traffic and into the slot. The pass found its intended target of Aly McLeod as she quickly flipped the puck in at 8:28.

With one minute remaining in the second period, the Golden Knights tied the score as the goals kept coming. Clarkson kept the puck in the Saints' defensive end along the right side boards and an initial shot was denied from the high slot. However, Clarkson's forward kept crashing the net and Sena Catterall was there for the rebound, knocking the puck in at 19:01.

St. Lawrence's perfect special teams were put to the test about five minutes into the third period, but not the way that the Saints expected. SLU went on the power play for the third time, but it was Clarkson that would score shorthanded. A hard shot went wide and bounced along the boards where Jenna Goodwin was able to win possession still in Clarkson's defensive zone. However, she tipped the puck off the right side board and once again used her superior speed to get alone in the Saints' zone, skating back through the slot from the right and beating Nordstrom stick side at 6:22 with a wrist shot.

The lead for the Knights wouldn't last long, though, with the Saints scoring on a 2-on-1 while the teams were skating 4-on-4. A turnover in the neutral zone saw Taylor Lum score unassisted while on that 2-on-1, keeping the puck herself for a wrist shot that got past Doucette's glove at 7:38 and setting the Saints up to win with their late goal.

Clarkson finished with a massive 38-17 edge in shots on goal (75-31 overall), but the Knights were scoreless in four power play chances and an extended stretch at the end of the game with a 6-on-5 after pulling the goaltender. St. Lawrence was 2-for-3 on the power play. Nordstrom finished with 33 saves and Doucette had 11 stops.

Graduate student Nicole Gosling was a part of some Clarkson history on Friday evening, becoming the Golden Knights' all-time leader in points as a blue line player. She recorded two assists to move her career total to 138, surpassing the 137 points scored by Erin Ambrose from 2012-2016.
