Knights Come Up Short at 17th-Ranked Hartford

Hartford, CT – Three goals in a stretch of less than 20 minutes overlapping the first and second halves proved enough as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team fell 3-1 to 17th-ranked Hartford University on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights slipped to 2-3 on the season, but will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to take on Plattsburgh State.

Neither team put much together in the way of offense in the early going. The first shot attempt of the game didn't come until the 18th minute of the contest, when Maddie Lopol's attempt went high for the Knights.  That would be the only shot of the half for Clarkson, and the Hawks converted on one of their three attempts in the opening period. In the 32nd minute, Christina Stone flipped the ball forward to the top of the penalty area, where Imani Jenkins settled the ball with her right foot and made a quick switch to her left to take a shot from about one step shy of the penalty stripe. She then snuck a hard groundball inside the near post at 31:20 to put Hartford up 1-0.

Hartford was able to gain a key second goal early in the second half off a penalty kick. Jenkins picked up possession just outside the penalty area on the top left corner and carried the ball in before she was tripped up about 10 yards out. Jenkins went ahead and took the penalty kick, scoring off a shot that went just to the right of Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio at 47:26. Just two minutes later Jenkins scored for the third time. She accepted a throw-in deep on the right side and then maneuvered through the Clarkson defense with soft touches for a shot just a few yards short of the Clarkson goal at 49:40.

Clarkson had a solid chance on a flukish shot when Brooke Everest charged the Hartford goalie and the Hawks' clearing attempt ricocheted on goal off Everest's blocking attempt in the 67th minute.  Eighteen minutes later, the Knights broke through with a late goal. A ball was played from midfield to the right side and freshman Aurora Zary sent a shot into the top corner on the opposite post from a step outside the penalty area, about 15 yards out.

Hartford held a 14-8 lead in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Molly DiCaprio stopped six shots in the Clarkson goal while Sejal Johnson made two stops.
