Knights' Offense Busy in 3-0 Win Over Plattsburgh State

Plattsburgh, NY – Chances were aplenty for the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team on Wednesday evening, and the Golden Knights found the back of the net three times to claim a 3-0 non-league win over Plattsburgh State.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 3-3 on the season while the Cardinals fell to 1-5. Clarkson has one more non-league game ahead before beginning the Liberty League schedule next week, as the Knights will take on another SUNYAC foe in Cortland on Saturday afternoon.

The game began with both teams playing fast, but not a lot resulting in the way of shots. In the first 23 minutes, Clarkson had more corner kick chances (six) than shots (five) while the Cardinals had just one shot in that time frame. A few moments later, Plattsburgh almost got on the board with a shot from outside the penalty area, but the attempt sailed over the woodwork.

Less than three minutes after Plattsburgh's close call, the Golden Knights went on a 3-on-2 break from the midfield, where Chloe Hodge was able to beat a defender and race in tight for a shot, but she was taken down inside 10 yards, resulting in a penalty kick. Maddie Lopol was selected to take the shot, which was stopped by goalkeeper Lauren Haley, as well as a second chance from Lopol. However, it appeared as if Haley jumped off her line early, giving the Knights another opportunity. Haley again got a hand on Lopol's attempt, but this time it trickled over the line to put the Knights up 1-0 at 31:08.

Clarkson's defense continued to keep Plattsburgh quiet for the rest of the first half and for the start of the second half, allowing the Knights to eventually tally on one of their many chances. It was the defense that started things off for goal number two, as Julia Tylar stepped up near midfield to deny a clearing attempt by the Cardinals. Tylar put a leg out to deflect the ball back into the middle, where Chloe Hodge picked up possession. Hodge sent a short pass to Brooke Butler, and the first-year collegian took a shot in traffic with her left foot going to the far post at 60:58 to make it 2-0.

The Knights picked up an insurance goal in the final 15 minutes when it appeared as if Haley was whistled for a handball as she slid outside the penalty area with the ball, giving a free kick from near the end line. Brooke Everest craftily sent a pass around the small wall in front of her, finding Emma Robinson, who volleyed the ball in with one touch at 75:14.

The Golden Knights finished with a 20-7 edge in shots and 11-2 in shots on goal, and Clarkson also led in corners 10-1. Molly DiCaprio was called upon to make two saves while Haley had to stop eight shots for Plattsburgh.
