Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Clarkson Falls In Overtime to Geneseo, 9-8

Geneseo, NY – For the fourth time since 2011, the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and SUNY Geneseo required overtime to settle the matchup, with the home team picking up the win less than 90 seconds into the extra session to beat the Golden Knights 9-8 on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson fell to 2-3 overall and will look to regroup against Plattsburgh State on Wednesday at home. SUNY Geneseo improved to 3-2 on the year.

After falling behind early on two occasions in the first quarter, the Golden Knights tied the contest in the second on Matt Reilly's man-up goal and then took the lead a few minutes later on Andrew Kearney's tally at the 10:03 mark. Clarkson had a two-goal advantage when Tyler Hall scored with 5:32 remaining in the second as the Golden Knights' defense kept Geneseo off the board for the entirety of the second period, and for a stretch of nearly 29 minutes overall from the first to the third quarters.

However, Geneseo got things going in the third with consecutive goals from Ronnie Trebing and then two straight goals from Jimmy Atkinson, putting the home squad back on top, 7-6. Midway through the fourth, Thomas Fiebich scored two goals just 44 seconds apart to give Clarkson the lead once again, but Geneseo tied the contest at 5:32 when Jack Helrigel scored unassisted.

In overtime, Geneseo won the faceoff and took a timeout to set up the team's offense. Although Griffin Emerson stopped the first shot of the possession, Geneseo held on to things in its end with a groundball. Jimmy Atkinson then went one-on-one behind the net on the right side and used two spin moves to create space and bounced a low shot in at 2:44 of overtime.

Andrew Kearney and Thomas Fiebich each scored three points on two goals and an assist for the Knights, while Tyler Hall added a goal and one assist. Matt Szwagulinski recorded four groundballs and caused one turnover and Joe Porto added two caused turnovers and three groundballs. Emerson was strong in the crease for the Knights, making 18 saves.

For Geneseo, Ronnie Trebing and Jimmy Atkinson each scored three goals and BB Syrop won 14-of-19 faceoffs while also adding in six groundballs.
