Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Clarkson Closes Out SUNY Potsdam Late, 9-5

Potsdam, NY – The first two quarters made it appear as if last year's low-scoring affair between the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team and SUNY Potsdam would be an outlier, but a relatively quiet second half had Wednesday's game nearly mirror the score from a year ago, as the Green and Gold came away with a 9-5 victory against SUNY Potsdam at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights edged back over .500 and improved to 5-4 on the year, while Potsdam suffered its second loss of the season to fall to 6-2. Clarkson will head back to conference play on Saturday when it hosts Skidmore College.

Clarkson scored three times in roughly six minutes to start the game as Andrew Kearney, Matt Reilly, and Sebastian Geiger all found the back of the net for the Golden Knights by the 8:50 mark of the opening quarter. Potsdam quickly rallied back with two goals near the midway point of the quarter, just 71 seconds apart, to pull back within one.

Potsdam again scored back-to-back goals, albeit four minutes apart, in the middle of the second to tie the game for the first time at 4-4. A minute later, though, the Knights would be back on top when Andrew Kearney connected with Sebastian Geiger at the 4:01 mark. Matt Reilly gave the Knights some breathing room with a goal with just seconds to go as well.

The final two quarters were relatively quiet in terms of offense, as both teams dropped by roughly 40% in regards to shots, though the shots on goal output was similar. Penalties ramped up in the second half, with only two whistled in the first 30 minutes but eight in the final 30. Potsdam scored a minute into the third quarter but was held off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest, allowing the Knights to slowly pull away down the stretch.

Matt Reilly finished with five points on four goals and one assist while Thomas Fiebich added three assists. Sebastian Geiger (2-0-2) and Andrew Kearney (1-1-2) also chipped in two points. Matt Szwagulinski was busy with seven groundballs and two caused turnovers and Jack Garvey also caused two turnovers.

For Potsdam, Peyton Walsh and Owen Walsh each contributed two goals. Drew Costello recorded four groundballs and Cole Slavin caused two turnovers.

The Knights had modest advantages in shots (39-30), shots on goal (19-13), and groundballs (33-31). Emersion Griffin made eight saves for Clarkson and Saka Thompson stopped 10 shots for the Bears.
