Knights Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime to Skidmore, 13-12

Potsdam, NY – A goal less than two minutes into overtime decided what was a tight game throughout, as the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team suffered a tough defeat at home against Skidmore College, 13-12 in Liberty League action at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights saw their mark fall to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in conference games while Skidmore improved to 9-2 and 1-1 in league contests. Clarkson faces St. John Fisher at home on Wednesday.

At the end of each quarter in the first half, Skidmore scored goals to just edge forward after each frame had been played evenly. In the first quarter, Andrew Kearney scored off a pass from Sam Mancabelli with a little over a minute to tie the game at 3-3, but Charlie McFadden connected with Charlie Kessler with only 34 seconds to go to put the Thoroughbreds up one. At the start of the second, Tyler Hall tied the game, only to see Skidmore score twice to take a 6-4 advantage. Kearney and Connor Matthews scored 51 seconds apart late in the period to tie the game once again, but Skidmore got a goal from Jon Byrne to retake the lead, and Charlie McFadden scored with one second left to again put the Thoroughbreds up by two.

Clarkson's defense played well in the third quarter, holding the Thoroughbreds without a shot for the first eight minutes of the quarter. The Knights pulled to within one on Matt Reilly's goal early, but Caleb Lawson tallied with less than seven minutes remaining to put the margin back to two. Andrew Kearney then scored, unassisted, at the 3:32 mark to again reduce the deficit to one. Clarkson finished the quarter with a 12-2 edge in shots, pushing its overall margin to 37-19 through 45 minutes.

The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter as Clarkson netted two to tie the game at 10-10. Skidmore regained the lead briefly midway through the fourth on a goal from Matthew Pinckney, but back-to-back goals by Connor Holly gave Clarkson its first lead since the start of the first quarter. As time was winding down, in the shot clock with just over a minute to go, Skidmore forced a turnover and David Koffler sprinted down the field to tie the game at 12-12 with just under a minute remaining. Clarkson was the ensuing faceoff, but Avery Stamps made a save off an attempt from Matt Reilly to send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, Clarkson won the faceoff and again Stamps was able to make a stop on a Matt Reilly shot, giving Skidmore its first offensive possession. Brian Gonsalves's first shot was high. On the restart, it appeared as if a Clarkson double team on the right side would force a turnover by Gonsalves, but he ducked out of the defense and bounced a shot in just inside the left post at the 2:35 mark.

Andrew Kearney led the Clarkson offense with six points, scoring five goals and adding an assist as he took 14 shots overall. Connor Holly added in three points (2-1-3) and Alex Seiler scored a pair of goals. Connor Matthews (1-1-2) and Sam Mancabelli (0-2-2) also had two points. Logan Wilkinson scooped up 10 groundballs, Jack Garvey had five groundballs and caused two turnovers, and Tyler Griffin produced four groundballs and caused three turnovers.

For Skidmore, Gonsalves finished with four points on two goals and two assists while David Koffler (3-0-3) and Charlie McFadden (2-1-3) each contributed three points. Kyle Goodwin had five groundballs and Charlie Murphy caused three turnovers.

Clarkson finished with a 50-28 edge in shots, though the margin for shots on goal was closer at 25-18. Clarkson also won the battle on the ground with 38 groundballs to Skidmore's 27. Griffin Emerson made five saves for the Knights, while Avery Stamps stopped 13 shots for the Thoroughbreds.
