Knights Drop Pair in Ithaca, 3-1 and 12-5

Ithaca, NY – Days of postponements finally came to an end on Tuesday for the Clarkson University Baseball team, but the Golden Knights return from Florida came up empty as the Golden Knights dropped pair of games to Ithaca College 3-1 and 12-5 in Liberty League action at Booth Field on the campus of Cornell University.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League while the Bombers moved to 10-4 and 2-0. The two teams may end up making the third game of the series later in the season, but no plans have been made at this point. Clarkson heads to RIT this weekend for another three-game conference set.

Hits were at a premium in the first game as each team had just six hits in the nine-inning contest. Ithaca took advantage of some walks in the first inning to score three runs in its first at bat. Collin Feeney singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a throwing error and was eventually driven home by a Matt Curtis single. After two walks loaded the bases, Colin Shashaty doubled in two more to put the score at 3-0.

Clarkson would stay scoreless until the fifth when the Knights pushed a run across. With one out, Beau Vardion reached on a single and then moved to third on a double to left-center by Aiden Kuefner. CJ Cartier then lifted a sac fly to center to allow Vardion to score, putting the score at 3-1. Clarkson loaded the bases in the sixth, but couldn't cash in and the Knights had just one more runner reach in their final three at bats.

Colin Leyner earned the win for Ithaca, striking out seven and allowing five hits in seven innings, and Conor Burns earned a two-inning save. Nicholas Hofacker took the loss, giving up five hits in five frames.

In game two, the Knights gained an early lead with two runs in the third and one more in the fourth. With runners on first and third, Joe Figliolino singled in CJ Cartier for the first run and a Jake Millich fielder's choice allowed Kent Wilson to score. In the fourth innings, Beau Vardion led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch, allowing James Mason's single through the right side to make the score 3-0.

Ithaca responded with some big numbers in the bottom of the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings. Riley Brawdy's single with the bases loaded pushed the Bombers' first run across, and an error allowed two more to score, tying the game at 3-3. Ithaca took the lead when Brawdy scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. In the sixth, Louis Fabbo singled in a pair and Matt Curtis drove in another for a 7-3 Ithaca lead. In the seventh, Lucas Orlovitz doubled in a run, an error sent a runner from third home for the second run of the frame, and two more came on hits later in the inning. Ithaca also tacked on a 12th run in the eighth inning.

Down by nine, Clarkson didn't go quietly, scoring two in the top of the ninth. Kent Wilson's double scored James Mason, and Wilson came around on a sacrifice fly from Joe Figliolino for the final tally.

The top of Clarkson's lineup combined for six hits as Mason, Wilson, and Figliolino each recorded two hits for the Knights.
