Gould Throws Four Scoreless in Knights 12-9 Win Over Framingham State

Auburndale, FL – Offense flowed for the first four innings on Thursday, but Carter Gould came on in the sixth and tossed four shutout innings for the Clarkson University Baseball team to help the Golden Knights hold on for a 12-9 victory over Framingham State in the finale of the Clarkson Florida Trip.

The Golden Knights will leave Florida with a record of 7-3. Clarkson was scheduled to begin Liberty League play on Friday against Ithaca College, but that three-game set has been pushed back to Sunday/Monday due to weather concerns.

Clarkson began the first inning with a single from James Mason and was able to score two runs in frame without the benefit of another hit. Beau Vardion walked and a ground out pushed both runners up to second and third. Mason then scored on a wild pitch and Robert Fratangelo plated Vardion with a sacrifice fly. Ryan Doyle delivered a one-out double in the bottom of the first to put the score at 2-1.

In the second, both teams posted five-spots. Will Roda tripled in Christopher Griggs and then scored on a single from Kent Wilson (as did James Mason). Fratangelo then doubled in two more to make it 7-1, but the Rams came back in the bottom half of the inning, with the big blow being a three-run triple off the bat of Jean Carlos Espinal.

Clarkson continued to roll on offense, scoring four more runs in the third. Roda had a ground out to score Kyle Ventola, James Mason singled in another run, Kent Wilson's sac fly put the Knights in double figures, and Fratangelo doubled again to make it 11-6. In the bottom of the fourth, Framingham State scored three thanks to hits from Boyle and Espinal, as well as a sac fly.

Both teams would become relatively quiet the rest of the way, though each had its chances to tack on runs to their respective totals. Only Clarkson would do so in the top of the seventh. Fratangelo singled with one out and then came home on a triple to right-center that was just missed by the Rams' centerfielder. Carter Gould did the rest, tossing three scoreless frames from that point on to secure the victory.

Fratangelo finished 4-for-5 with four RBI, Wilson was 2-for-3 and Griggs was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. Mason and Vardion each scored three times for the Knights. For Framingham State, Espinal finished four runs driven in, while Boyle reached four times with two hits and two walks.
