Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Knights advance in ECAC Playoffs with 6-3 win over Princeton

Potsdam, NY – Haley Winn scored twice and assisted on another goal as the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team finished off its ECAC Quarterfinals series with a sweep over Princeton University, claiming a 6-3 victory in game two of the matchup at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson improved to 31-3-2 on the season and will face third-seeded St. Lawrence University in the ECAC Hockey Semifinals next weekend, hosted by Colgate University. Princeton finished off its season with a record of 14-12-6.

Each team had plenty of opportunities in the first period, as both took 20 shots with roughly half making it on the net. Although none of the shots made it past either goaltender in the first period that would not be the case over the final 40 minutes.

Clarkson struck for three goals in a stretch of less than five minutes in the middle of the second quarter. The first came at the 7:44 mark of the second as the puck was stolen by Darcie Lappan, who then worked her way in front to either get another touch or provide a screen in front of Jennifer Olnowich, allowing Dominique Petrie to flip in the first goal of the contest. Less than two minutes later, a long shift for Princeton's defenders culminated in another Clarkson goal. The puck never left the Tigers' zone for nearly a minute and Haley Winn took advantage of some tired legs, taking her time to pinpoint her wrist shot into the top right corner at 9:36. Clarkson's third goal of the period came on the power play at 12:11 as Winn took a shot from nearly the same spot as her previous goal, but this one was denied by a blocker of Olnowich. However, the puck quickly found the stick of Anne Cherkowski, who easily slapped in the rebound to put the Knights up 3-0.

Six goals were scored in the first 12 minutes of the third period, with each team finding the back of the net three times. Clarkson was the first to do so when Sara Swiderski wristed in a shot in the middle of the slot at 1:19. Princeton quickly responded when Dominique Cormier's one-timer attempt was blocked by the blade of Alexie Guay. However, Guay didn't catch the puck totally clean, and instead it went over to Emerson O'Leary at the bottom of the right circle for an easy tip-in at 2:06. Two minutes later, Jenna Goodwin's shot from the right circle was blocked, only to find her stick again where she flipped in a shot from the right slot at 4:44 to put Clarkson up 5-1.

It appeared as if Clarkson would walk away with a lopsided win when Brooke McQuigge patiently waited for numbers on a counter as Haley Winn was the recipient of McQuigge's pass at the top of the left circle, giving the Knights a 6-1 advantage with less than 10 minutes to play. However, the dust had barely settled from the celebration of Winn's goal when Sarah Fillier scored on a shot wrist shot only 15 seconds later. The Tigers continued to be on the offensive prowl just a minute later as Fillier scored again to put the deficit back to three at 11:39. That would be it for the Tigers, though, despite going close to three minutes without backup goalie Uma Corniea playing in net as Princeton tried to cut the margin by using an extra attacker.

Five players had multi-point games for the Knights, led by Winn's three points (2-1-3) and Brooke McQuigge's three assists. Dominique Petrie had a goal and an assist, Darcie Lappan produced a pair of assists, and Anne Cherkowski had a goal and one assist, including the 100th point of her collegiate career (combined between Minnesota and Clarkson).

Clarkson finished with a 32-23 edge in shots and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Princeton was 0-for-2 with a player advantage. Michelle Pasiechnyk made 20 saves for Clarkson. Princeton's Jennifer Olnowich made 22 saves in just under 45 minutes of play, while Uma Corniea had four saves in less than 13 minutes for the Tigers.
