Knights Win Slugfest with Lawrence University, 13-12

Auburndale, FL – Thirty-one combined hits made for a long contest on Tuesday afternoon, but the Clarkson University Baseball team held on for a 13-12 win in a slugfest over Lawrence University at the Northeast Regional Park in Florida.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-3 on the season while Lawrence fell to 8-5 for the campaign. Clarkson closes out its Florida trip with a nine-inning game against Framingham State on Wednesday.

The Vikings threatened in the top of the ninth after two hits put runners on first and second against Nicholas Hofacker. But the senior pitcher struck out the three and four hitters in the Lawrence lineup, both looking, to end the game.

Runs were frequent throughout Tuesday's game, beginning in the first frame. The Vikings picked up a run in their first at bat when Jacob Charon knocked in Parker Knoll, but the Knights responded with two in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded, Jake Millich reached on a fielder's choice to plate Joe Pagano, and Kent Wilson scored from third when Millich was caught stealing at second.

Clarkson scored three in the bottom of the second, doing so without an RBI hit. Beau Vardion drew a one-out walk and Joe Pagano walked with two down before Kent Wilson singled to center to load the bases. Joe Figliolino walked to force in a run, Millich was hit by a pitch to push another across, and James Mason walked to drive in another run.

Lawrence tied the game in its next two at bats, getting one run on an infield single from Charon and then scoring three in the fourth. The first run came in on a fielder's choice, the next on a sac bunt with runners on first and third, and the last on a single by Edan Perez.

Clarkson quickly got those runs back and more in the bottom of the fourth. Figliolino drove in a run and Mason again walked with the bases loaded. Aidan Kuefner followed with a single up the middle, keeping the bases packed with Golden Knights. Robert Whalen then cleared them with a double to left, putting the tally at 11-5.

Lawrence chipped away with a run in the fifth on a solo shot by Charon and a run in the sixth on an error, but Clarkson regained a six-run lead in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI hits from CJ Cartier and Kent Wilson. From that point on, however, the Knights' offense was stagnant while the Vikings came back. Lawrence scored three in the seventh and then two more in the eighth, though three of those five runs were unearned due to Clarkson errors.

In the ninth, Hofacker came on in relief and quickly induced a fly out to right. Two singles put the tying and go-ahead run on base, but Hofacker went up in the zone twice to strike out Parker Knoll and Jacob Charon looking to end the game.

Hofacker earned the save while Ben Hand got the win pitching the middle innings for the Knights. Kent Wilson went 4-for-6 and scored three times while Joe Figliolino, Robert Whalen, and Beau Vardion each had multi-hit games.
