Game Recap: Men's Baseball |

Knights Sweep Wisconsin-Eau Claire to Move to 5-3

Auburndale, NY – Putting together some big innings and getting runs at key moments, the Clarkson University Baseball team was able to earn a doubleheader sweep against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, taking game one 10-4 and winning the second contest 9-8 in extra innings on Sunday.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-3 on the year and have Monday off. Clarkson returns to action on Tuesday afternoon taking on Lawrence University at 4:30 pm.

In the opener, the Blugolds scored twice in the first innings and two more times in the second, but the Knights kept pace. Eau Claire got the first run on a double from Drew Salyers and a fielder's choice for Matt Melendez scored a second run in the opening inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Clarkson strung together three straight doubles to plate three runs as Kent Wilson, Joe Figliolino, and Pat Elliott each delivered extra-base hits to score runs. In the top of the second, Walter Johnson ripped a ball off Carter Gould that went into left field for a double to score one run, and a fielding error allowed a second run to score. Wilson then tied the game in the bottom of the second with another double, scoring Joe Pagano, who had extended the inning by reaching on passed ball.

Clarkson broke the game open in the bottom of the third with five runs. Aidan Kuefner led off with a triple down the left field line, Jake Millich followed with a triple to right center, and James Mason then hit a home run to left-center to put the score at 7-4. Later, a throwing error would allow two runs to come in and make the score 9-4. Clarkson capped its scoring with a solo home run from CJ Cartier in the fifth.

Wilson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Joe Pagano scored twice, but the offense was mostly spread out in the Clarkson offense. Hunter Geisler came on in relief of Gould after the second inning and tossed five scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out two to earn the win.

Game two again saw Clarkson put up a crooked number in the early going as the team plated five in the top of the second. The bases were loaded with a walk and consecutive singles, allowing Quinn Maslowski's single to right to score two. Another walked loaded the bases again, giving Kent Wilson an easy opportunity for an RBI, where he delivered with a single to center. Jake Millich then singled in two more to put the tally at 5-0.

Eau Claire scored one in the bottom of the second, but the Knights got the run back when Quinn Maslowski had a sac fly to score Robert Fratangelo, who opened the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. The Blugolds picked up three runs in the third with the benefit of just one hit, and in the fifth they scored four more, with the big blow coming off the bat of Ryan Casimier, who produced a two-out single to center to make the score 8-6 in favor of the home team.

Down to its last at bat, Clarkson scored twice in the seventh to send the game to extras. Kuefner singled to short and then stole second and Fratangelo singled to left. The runners moved up to second and third after a ground out, and Beau Vardion's single to right make it 8-7. Maslowski then hit a hard ground ball up the middle, where it appeared it would be fielded to get at least one out and possibly a double play to end the game. However, the ball was misplayed, allowing Fratangelo to score, tying the game.

Clarkson got the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. James Mason reached on an error and advance to second. A ground out sent him to third, putting pinch-hitter Robert Whalen in a solid spot. Whalen ripped a shot back up the middle to score Mason, and Derrick Lewis took care of the rest, finishing off 3.2 innings of relief work with a scoreless ninth.

Lewis earned the win, scattering four hits and striking out two. Pagano was 2-for-4, Wilson 2-for-5, Fratangelo 2-for-3 with three runs, and Vardion was 2-for-4. Maslowski went 1-for-3, but drove in four runs.
