Knights Split With UMass-Dartmouth

Davenport, FL - Freshman Beau Vardion homered and drove in four runs in his first collegiate start for the Clarkson University Baseball team, helping the Golden Knights to a split against UMass-Dartmouth, dropping the first game 6-5 and winning game two 7-3 at Northeast Regional Park.

The Golden Knights moved to 3-3 on the season and will face Wisconsin Eau-Claire on Sunday morning.

In game one, the Corsairs came away with a one-run win in the bottom of the seventh after both teams slugged home runs. Clarkson scored in the top of the first when Kent Wilson came around on a passed ball and Joe Figliolino scored on a sac fly by Pat Elliott. UMass-Dartmouth countered with a run in the bottom of the first, a solo shot by Sam Laurie, and then the Corsairs picked up three more on a three-run bomb by Joe Muzio. A sac fly by Laurie in the fourth put the score at 5-2 in favor of the Corsairs.

Clarkson rallied back with three runs in its next two at bats. Pat Elliott hit a two-run homer, scoring Joe Figliolino, in the fifth, and CJ Cartier hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie the score. However, the ball never the left the infield in the bottom of the seventh as a hit by pitch, two bunts, and a throwing error allowed UMass-Dartmouth to escape with the game one win.

Wilson was 2-for-4 and Figliolino was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the opener. Elliott also drove in three runs.

In game two, UMass-Dartmouth started the contest with two runs in the first as Laurie scored when he opened the inning with a single, then stole second, reached third on a passed ball, and came around on a ground out. Jake SanAnto later drove in a run with a sac fly before Clarkson had its first at bat.

Clarkson scored in the bottom of the third. Robert Fratangelo doubled and moved to third on a ground out before Cartier drove him in with a sac fly. The Corsairs got the run back in the fourth, but Clarkson tallied three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull away late. Cam Jerrett singled and Fratangelo walked to set the stage for Vardion, who drove in himself and the two baserunners with a home run in the fifth. In the sixth, Elliott scored a run on a passed ball while both Vardion and Cartier drove in runs with base hits.

Vardion was 2-for-3 in the game with four RBI while Cartier went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Fratangelo reached in three place appearances, getting one hit and two walks to score three times. Joe Godomsky picked up the win by pitching a scoreless fifth, and Brett Porter earned the save with two spotless frames in the sixth and seventh.
