Knights Tie St. Lawrence in Area Youth Game

Canton, NY – Unlike a year ago when the two teams combined for nine goals to the delight of a packed house at Cheel Arena, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and St. Lawrence University skated to a 1-1 overtime tie, with the Golden Knights claiming the shootout 2-1, in front of a raucous crowd for the Area Youth Game held at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights moved to 9-3-1 overall and St. Lawrence saw its record go to 8-4-3 in the non-league tie. The two teams will meet up for a second non-conference contest on Saturday at Cheel Arena.

Although the pace was fast, top-level opportunities were infrequent for both teams in the opening two periods. The best chance for St. Lawrence came in the first period on an Abby Hustler breakaway as she received a pass in the neutral zone from Katina Duscio. Hustler skated in and tried to go five-hole, but Julia Minotti shut things down with the blockers and kept the game scoreless. In the second, Sarah Marchand had a couple of chances in close, but again Minotti put the pads out for the saves. Clarkson's best chance in the first two periods came midway through the second frame when Nicole Gosling's one-timer was denied by Emma-Sofie Nordstrom.

Both teams finally got on the board early in the third period, with the Saints doing so very quick after the second intermission. A soft shot off the blocker of Minotti scooted out on the goal line's right side for Marchand, who was able to flip the puck in despite a tough angle only 24 seconds in. St. Lawrence appeared to have another opportunity when Clarkson was whistled for a penalty, but the Knights had little trouble killing off that extra-skater chance despite Gosling spending nearly 40 seconds without a stick. The grad student was still able to block a shot and cause issues for the Saints' power play minus a piece of equipment.

Clarkson tied the game roughly four minutes after the Saints' goal. Madison Chantler brought the puck around the back of the net and Haley Winn also got a piece of the puck before St. Lawrence appeared to have cleared it around the right side boards. However, the puck found its way to the stick of Shelby Laidlaw, and as the Knights readjusted their positioning a screen was created, allowing Laidlaw's wrister to evade the blockers of Nordstrom.

One final chance emerged late in regulation when Abby Hustler once again found herself on a breakaway. This time she would not get a shot off, though, as Winn adeptly poked the puck away from behind with only 20 seconds left in the period.

Following a scoreless overtime in which the officials let the teams play a bit more than usual, the two teams went to the shootout. St. Lawrence's second skater, Marchand, scored on a stop and fake into the upper corner for a 1-0 advantage. However, Minotti was strong from that point on and watched Gosling score on a backhand after multiple moves to tie it at 1-1. Finally, Sena Catterall methodically skated in and used a strong forehand on the left side of the crease to put Clarkson up 2-1.

Clarkson finished with a modest 29-27 advantage in shots on goal and kept the Saints off the scoreboard on two power play chances. Minotti finished with 26 saves and Nordstrom had 28 stops for St. Lawrence.
